I have yet to breed my own but I've loved almost everything I've seen from 1OAK! I've had three by him just myself, a great commercial cross steer, a super clubby winning steer, and now the second steer's full sister who's about 10 times better than he was
Yep! I've got a few bulls picked out for calving ease for her first calf that don't have monopoly in their bloodlines
We're just trying to flush her and most bulls that complement her and/or are clean have monopoly in their lines, if that makes sense
How close is too close? I have a 1oak heifer I'm trying to pick a bull for, but since she's got monopoly in her bloodlines, it's making it REALLY hard to find a bull that doesn't. How close should you generally breed?
Might be a little late, but my friend has a heifer that was maybe 850 when she was bred this spring (about 950 now, she's getting a little fat)
Super small framed and very square, sounds like she's bred pretty similar to yours too
Our vet recommended Powerchip for her so that's what she's bred...
That makes sense, but I do wish they would do it at all ages- it might show them that the big steer is really just wayyy over finished and the smaller one, though pretty, isn't even close
That would make sense... I don't think I was annoyed with the steer but then again pictures from last year's fair showed me looking like I was about to kill someone and I thought I looked pleasant 😂🤷🏻
Is it normal for judges to not touch the calves in quality? Every fair that I've been to, the judge will run their hands up and down the calf's sides to see how finished/muscular/etc they are. At the jackpot I went to, the closest the judge even got was like a foot away. Also, are we supposed to...
Can someone explain to me what we're looking for in showmanship? At our county fair, it usually is based on who is handling their animal enough and who is being a good showman- at a jackpot I went to over the weekend (only my first so it might've been a fluke) it was definitely based on whose...
Hey everyone! I've got a problem that I've never encountered before and I need some help. One of my steers is really afraid of strangers. Background: I bought him at the end of October as an unbroken weanling who was known to be pretty nervous. His only personality trait was basically being wild...
