Shorthorns/Angus extremes can someone explain ?

Give me a field full of 1,100-1,300 lb. frame 4 something cows that can calve unassited, wean 50-70% of their body weight, without creep feed or any supplemental feed, and can breed back on time, maintain at least a bcs of 5 while nursing a calf, while grazing mostly fescue, because that is...

    Hardiest cattle breed

I raise Lowline Black Angus (full & crosses) & I really like them, but the answer, IMHO, is... "NO" & they "aint" even close to being the hardiest. Again, my vote is Longhorn or Scotch Highland, and it all depends upon the location as to which one.  IMHO, Tuli, Tarentaise & Galloways would rank...

    Hardiest cattle breed

Longhorns for most of the US.  Scotch Highlands for the colder states.    And it aint even close, IMHO.

Am I seeing things or not?

Color of the hide is only a personal perference thing.  It means absolutely nothing when it comes to measuring quality.  I raise Lowline Black Angus & crosses, but to say that black cattle are superior to everything else, is nothing more than a bunch of silly marketing hype.  JMHO.

Am I seeing things or not?

I didn't think so, but with DNA technology becoming more advanced & more common in recent years, I may be wrong.

Am I seeing things or not?

You are probably correct, as a whole lot of cattle will not grade on grass  a whole lot of grass finishers haven't learned the trade well enough to deliver a quality product.  However, I can tell you that all of the grass fed steak that I've ever seen either has graded USDA choice or it probably...

Am I seeing things or not?

It has to be 51% black, but I would guess that not all CAB is at least 50% Angus.

which bull should I breed this one to?

Since you mentioned that she needs sized down a little, I could recommend a bull that will sire low BW, power, softness, soundness, eye appeal, hair, consistency, extreme docility, etc., but... ...despite the fact that I have frame scored several of his 1/2 blood offspring consistently in the...

    Mo Better calf

To me, the calf looks brownish in the first pic & more of a dark chocolate in the 2nd pic, but certainly not red in either.  BIG, BIG difference between this calf's color & red.  I have no doubt that the calf could be from a homo black sire.

    Malpractice? Advice- Calving loss. .....nightmare

You are absolutely correct that it would have upset every one of us.  Some probably more than others, but we all would have been bothered by it to some extent.  The fact that it probably caused sleep loss, due to it happening during the night, would likely elevate the level of frustration for...

    Malpractice? Advice- Calving loss. .....nightmare

Lots of good posts in this thread... KLLR, Frostback, DL & others.  Everybody needs to keep in mind that there are 2 sides to every coin & I can see both sides.  For a few years we were without a local Vet to work on large animals.  Now we have a former football teammate of mine from HS who does...

    Malpractice? Advice- Calving loss. .....nightmare

I know I do.  We all do.  The most important part to consider here is that it sounds like the Vet didn't make his mistake on purpose.  Sometimes stuff just happens & unfortunately this sounds like one of those times.  Hopefully he will not bill for the extra trip or maybe give a discount on the...

    "A rib too long"

Gerald Frye & his disciples believe that too much body length is a defective trait that should be selected against & he claims that "most long backs have too small a loin muscle".  His website says this about back length... "The 2/3 top line is composed of the rump length and back length...

    Rained Soaked

I just saw in the news that Henderson County (our neighboring county to the northeast) has roughly 90 roads closed due to flooding!!

    Rained Soaked

I'm not too far from Galatia & only a few miles from the Ohio River.  I'm getting used to tornado warnings, flash flood warnings, severe thunderstorn warnings, road closures, flooded fields, etc., etc.!  State of emergency just across the river in Posey County, Indiana.  None of our crop ground...

    heifer plus and bull plus

Put 1 gallon of Apple Cider Vingar (not the A.C. flavored stuff, the real thing) in 100 gallons of water & mix it up.    Let your heifers & cows consume this ACV & water mixture at least 30-45 days prior to breeding.  People swear that this will greatly increase your % of heifer calves.  Does it...

    Iowa HS State Wrestling Tourny

Not Iowa, but my former HS won it's 6th Kentucky Championship Overall (no classifcations).  Not too bad for 3A HS out of 6 classifications (1A - 6A) in football.

    Beet Pulp

Actually it's TDN is higher than corn silage and it's significantly higher in TDN than mid bloom Alfalfa.  It is a filler, but it is not just a filler.

    New Beef Registry

I have a hunch, and I put some clues together, but no way of knowing for sure if I'm correct.  I do agree that chambero's questions need to be answered.
