    Describe yourself in cattle terms!

Hmmm?  OK, here goes. Remember in Blazing saddles when Mongo comes riding in on a less than galiant steed?  Now, picture that animal crossed with a near death donkey--I know, it's a stretch but stay with me. Next cross that God forsaken creation with an albino giraffe that looks like it just...

    Tire biting- woody not cattle!

Yeah, that dog would get after the vacuum even before you got the dang thing plugged in.  We had to lock him in another room to run the thing!

    Tire biting- woody not cattle!

Had a similar problem with a Sheltie a few years back...he would attack the wheels on the wagon when the kids pulled it around the yard.  Here's the amazing part--after oiling the axles, he stopped. Turns out that there was a high pitched noise coming from the wheels rotating on the axles and...

    Hereford Breeding Suggestions

Which of his best attributes to you feel he imparts on these females?  I was thinking of using his daddy, but is this blood line going to improve the rib shape, extention, or lower quarter?  That is where we need the help!!!

    Opinions on pumping

We are feeding a complete feed much the same as the high end stuff.  How much pulp would be acceptable to add to that?  How much more will it help if they have free hay?  What would alfalfa hay do?  and how much? With the KoolAid, which flavors, sweet or just a regular packet?  How much per...

    Opinions on pumping

Thanks CAB.  IMHO, the heifers are not all that bad.  As of now, they have such stout tops that they seem to be flat.  But, having seen them everyday, I have seen them fuller looking on some days over others.

    Opinions on pumping

He was talking about stomach pumping.  I know about doing it on show day, but have never gone to anything but a 4H show, so never gave it a second thought.  I guess what I am questioning is doing this early - we won't be showing until the middle of May.  I didn't have the time to ask him to...

    Opinions on pumping

We just took our Herf heifers to get hooves done, and the guy said that we should pump them to give them more shape and volume in the rib.  We have never done anything like that before! How would one go about it? And if we do it, do we just do it once? Or do we have to repeat it every so often...

Ahh yes.  No wonder I didn't know that - we are about as far apart as two can get in this state!!!

    Our 2008 Carcass Data

SRU - Yes, provided you are selling on a grid basis. chambero - Yes, the carcass comes off the kill floor hot and enters a hot box (a cooler so called due to the hot carcasses coming in) where it is stored with other hot carcasses.  The sum of the degree units in the beef must be overcome by...

    Our 2008 Carcass Data

The quality and yield grades are called by a USDA grader which each plant has to pay for.  The call on dentitioning age is done by a USDA trained plant employee.  The call on Angus preident is done that way as well - and then of those the grader calls CAB. One factor that can significantly...

    Off Topic.......Market sheep project

True.  Also the lamb should be considerably leaner than your other show animals, it is all about showing of the muscle.

Winnie the Poo - Are you a Tiger or Eore?

A little outside the box, but I would have to be an OWL!  I can bend your ear all day about anything - most of which I don't know dink about! ::) My wife says that most of the time I just need to SHUT UP and get to it already.  I can be a real analytical one!!! (clapping) Pete

    Our 2008 Carcass Data

That's the best info you have given yet!!!  Here in our plant, we are noticing a good correlation between implanted cattle and cattle that are unuasble in the export market.  It seems that the implants tend to speed up the ocification of the bones as well as the decay of the teeth.  The...

    Our 2008 Carcass Data

WOW!  66.10% sounds really high for crossbred blacks. Sounds like they were pretty well shrunk out, or they received a pretty solid pencil shrink. Considering the current market, with the dismal spread from choice to select, I would have to say that those cattle were fed out absolutely...

    Our 2008 Carcass Data

Really, daily gain is not the important number.  More important is the cost of gain.  If the ration is a lower MgCal resulting in less cost, it stands to reason the ADG will also be lower.  But, if a higher MgCal ration nets a proportionally higher gain, the cost of gain would be lower.  The...

I am so proud of my daughter - Kanshow you need to read this!!!

Hey - Thanks!!! We were debating whether or not the price of the video was justified.  Your comments have pushed me over the edge, I'm getting it!  How can you put a price on the sense of accomplishment your children feel when they succeed at anything. Pete
