What are your vices in life?

Coffee, cattle, and singing gospel music with my quartet.  Not nearly as exciting as they might have seemed when I was 25 years younger. (lol)

    RADIOACTIVE

Saw him at the Ohio Beef Expo a couple years ago.  We were impressed, but didn't get to see him on the move.  How do you all think he might work on a Double Stuff daughter?

    Gas Prices

I paid 3.999 for diesel fuel yesterday!!  Gotta love NY state and all of the taxes that go alone with living here.  The better mileage on the new truck compared to the old "gas job" has me about at the break even point, as gas is 3.319.  The thing that surprised my was when my wife and I were in...

    White Boy

Has anyone had any experience with the bull White Boy?  Have a Black Impact cow bred to him, and just wondered if anyone had used him and had any calves.  Any information would be appreciated.

    1999 Dodge Ram

We bought our first deisel, an 07 Dodge, last spring.  Don't have another one to compare it to, but am getting ~22 MPG without towing and about 17 MPG under load.  The trailer that we have is small, but I am very happen with my Cummins Turbo powered Ram. (thumbsup)

    How is your county fair?

Sounds a little goofy, to a point.  Members of the fair board don't go and visit farms, but the advisors for the county wide beef program do.  There are limits on the amount of help a 4-H can get from family or other adults, but all in all our county show is pretty good.  The show averages 50...

Repeat of Thread from Last Year: Most anticipated Mating!

We don't have many females but are looking forward to a White Boy X Black Impact cow, Lifeline X Ali female, and 5 or 6 calves out of a Shorthorn bull that we bought at the OBE last March that is a Fear Factor son.  One of the cows he bred is a WMW and another is a Double Stuff x Simmental. ...

    Lifeline/Hairy Bear BW's

Have only had one Lifeline calf.  Used him on a Black Impact heifer.  She calved unassisted at 22 months of age.  Had a 75# healthy bull calf.  I know that you can't judge much from one breeding but we liked the outcome.  My daughter will be showing that calf as a steer at our fair this year.

How did you meet your someone special?

Saw this thread while travelling and couldn't respond then.  Believe it or not, my wife and I met at the county fair.  I was showing beef cattle and she was showing dairy.  We were introduced by a mutual friend and the rest, as they say is history.  That was in 1979 and we are about to...

    Irish Whiskey

Can't say much more.  The "look" that I want is one that breathes, eats, and if a female, reproduces.  I believe that Forrest Gump said, "And that's all I have to say about that."

    COLLEGE FOOTBALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Even though I am a hard core Buckeye fan, I think that the Dixon kid from Oregon is making a case for Heisman.  Don't get to see him play much living back East but he looks good on the highlight reel. On a somewhat related note, anyone hearing who is going to replace Callahan at Nebraska?  I am...

    hockey

Early season success is nice, but don't get too excited.  As far as Ottawa is concerned I hope they keep it up because that will likely mean an exit before the finals this year.  I am hoping that the Senators and the Sabres do a little "role reversal" from last season, resulting in the boys from...

    Which breed is better??

Feed Lot-anything that gains 3+ lbs. per day with a 5 to 1 (or better feed effciency)  ;D Show ring:  same as above only they grow hair O0 like a Chia Pet, and have the dispostion of a 10 year old hound dog!! (lol)

    NAILE get together?

What dates will you be in L-ville.  May try to make it down the weekend of 11/10.  My work schedule may not allow that, but if I make it and you are there I will try to look you up.

    Feeding Barley

Just wanted some opinions and thoughts from others about using barley in show cattle rations "year 'round".  Have used it as part of our custom mix for the past 2-3 years but only the last 60 days before our county fair. Given that it is expensive do you think it is worth feeding from start to...

    Aflatoxin

Not sure how aflatoxin affects ruminants, but it will kill simple stomached animals, such as swine.  Where I work we deal with raw and roasted peanuts and aflatoxin is a big deal.

    Buying cows- need help

I agree with OH Breeder about the genetics you can get using embryos.  Only problem is getting someone in our area to work with for beef cattle.  If you can find sound cows, 4-6 years old, I would go that route.  Heifers are nice but sometimes can be hard to get bred that first time, especially...

    Fun Calf Names

We had two grand champions a couple of years ago, one was name Smokin' Stogie (Cigar calf) and the other Rajin' Cajun (Habanero calf).  Some other have been Quince (Spanish for #15, his eartag), Clubber, Spanky, Twitch, Bodacious, Power Bar, can't remember them all.  We really try to have fun...

    Corn vs. Barley Base

We have been using barley in place of some of the corn in our finishing ration for the last four years.  It is expensive but we have had a fair amount of success with it.  It does help keep hair on the show calves and I think provides somewhat of a "smoother" finish on the steers.  The other...
