    Best Heifers

I completely understand your pain.  When I was a kid I saved my money and paid a lot of money for a really nice reg. yearling heifer.  We tried everything in the book to get her to breed, but just had no luck.  Luckily there was a breeding guarantee so we were reimbursed the purchase price, but...

    Ohldes

I am not looking to bring anything back, but I am curious to see how everything sold out there.  I am also interested to see what the best sire groups are out there, and how the Missing Links looked.

    Young Farmers Loans

One of my best friends is a loan officer for the FSA.  They have many programs for young farmers.  He has loans every year from kids to buy their show prospects for that year.  I am getting ready to get one myself to buy some cattle.  I will be looking at about 4% and up to 7 year duration.

    Huh?

I can relate to the cabless tractor problem.  I now wear the large ear muffs, like the kind you use when you run a chainsaw.  I also remember being in the clubs when I was younger, they would play the music  so loud that my ears were still ringing the next day.  If only we knew then what we know...

    BC Lookout

I planned on using him on some heifers this year.  I really like the looks of this bull, but have not seen any calves out of him.  Does he breed just like Legend or should I expect a little more frame due to his dam?  Has anyone seen any of his calves and if so have you been impressed?

    Lutalace Questions...

To speed up a cow in anestrous then you need to use a CIDR.  A shot of prostaglandin (Lut) will only work if the cow is cycling.  I would give a shot of GnRH and put a CIDR in her for 7 days.  Then turn her straight out with the bull.  I do this to our late cows and it really speeds them up.

Angus bulls to use on Simmy Cows

I personally love the ohlde cross on Simmi cows, but if you like larger cattle then I understand why you would not want to go that route.  If the cow is stout enough, then the Northern Improvement line, such as Lutton or Juneau would work well.  I personally like the SAV line of 004 sons.  The...

When does a person have too much Influence?

LOL, that is the truth with the Angus catalog.  Some of the angus people are so lost that they have no idea what is good anymore.  They have to tell everyone that this is what its mother and siblings brought in previous sells to try to persuade you that this one is worth a lot as well.  When...

    Dr Who

Our Dr. Who's have been average for BW.  No problems on that end, we used him mostly on purebred angus cows.  He added thickness and bone, but will not put a real fancy front end on them.  I would breed him to an fancy fronted cow that just needs a little bone and thickness without sacrificing...

    SH Heifer - Breeding Advice

I know that none of the shorthorn guys probably want to hear this, but I have seen OCC Legend do wonders on first calf Shorthorn heifers.  Saw one the last year sell for 5K out of the pasture.  They are very fancy calves, yet will grow out to be excellent cows.

    best Friction son ?

If you want to go the safe route you could go angus and breed her to a bull like Duff New Edition or Emblazon, for a sure thing cow.  My vote would be to go Simmi with her.  Macho is not a bad idea at all.  He will keep her stylish and add some power to her.  The whole Friction idea for a...

    My 5 Worst breeding mistakes!

    1.  I can only speak from personal experience, but I also did not have any luck with Habanero, or as we called him I-bee-narrow.  2.  Godfather was a cripple producer for us. 3.  The Totally Tuned's were Totally unsalable. 4.  Hot Spot, I guess I really should have saw that one coming.

    First Calf Heifer tales

Had one last year that had the calf, and cleaned it off.  The problem was anytime the calf would move and try to stand the cow would start hollering and then attempt to maul the calf.  The calf could not get near the cow or it would get trampled.  We ended up feeding the cow and the calf would...

    Total Play

I was way off on those two bulls, guess I did not study those old show circuits hard enough.  Speaking of Full Throttle I have some in the tank, that I have never used.  Anyone still using this bull, and if so did he breed the same a Flush?

    Sun Seeker

I have seen this bull be a real cow changer and do some nice things on certain cows.  My personal experience has not been good though.  I have had a very common narrow chested heifer out of him and a crippled up steer.  One thing they had in common is that they were big boned and a ton of leg...

Bulls that would clean up a udder????

I am not an expert of shorthorn genetics.  If I had to guess I would think the the new bull Jazz from Ohlde's would be an udder fixer.  They seem to put a lot of emphasis on udder quality on all of their cattle so I would assume that he would do the same as their angus do to improve udder quality.

    Total Play

If you look at all the good bulls that he produced, he could easily be one of the most influential bulls in the clubby industry, especially in the 90's.  Many sons such as Foreplay, Debull, Playboy, and Schwarzkopf to name a few were used heavily.  Just like his sons, breed to moderate big...

Why do you like your breed of cattle?

Hey Road Warrior,   I am interested to see what you think about the bull Canyon 2222.  I know that you said the Canyon line had some issues.  Wanted to know if you had any experience with this bull.  He seems to be the kind I like.  Very moderate on frame, thick muscled, but with good growth. ...
