    Local Shorthorn show

;D  Love it!  The kids all look like they had fun--smiles all around. This is just me, but I appreciate seeing the cattle at the show as they are.  All you need is a hose, scrub brush, soap and curry comb.  Clean and healthy works for me at a show!! EF

OH BEEF EXPO SHORTHORN SALE RESULTS???

Someone posted that the ASA was not in favor of the bull walking in-- how much pull would the ASA have to stop a deal like this or refuse transfers, registrations, etc.??  I mean it is their registry-- they can refuse animals, can't they?  not looking for an argument, just asking. Vanridge--...

:)Outcross is my thing!  Come visit when you get the chance!  or check the web:  www.fordfamilyshorthorns.com The other folks posting on here are right-- a lot of the outcross and non-traditional breeders are smaller and sometimes harder to find-- but boy are they worth the effort!  Get a List...

OH Breeder!! Awesome Leader heifer!! Let me know if she is available for sale this fall!!! Seriously!!! I have my first calf out of my Leader 21st bull this past weekend.  I am very very pleased with the first one-- He has a butt on him a mile wide and was  83# for a BW.  Just waiting for...

Our one and only 2012 spring calf.

It appears that there is a Great Pyrnees guard dog in the background?  I know they work really well for sheep and goats as guardians, but do they also work as cow guardians, or do the cows just get stressed out having a dog around when they are calving or have young calves? thanks EF

    Breeding shorthorn

Old World Shortie: Roanoake Flashback is a great choice!  Joe was thinking ahead when he bred and kept that bull.  Even though JPJ has Leader in his line, I don't think using it again on the JPJ daughters is a terrible idea.  Will hopefully bring some good consistency to BW I have a similarly...

    Asset Semen

What is the percentage of semen production is an inheritable trait? Fertility is important on both sides- males and females-- does this trait limit him to be best suited for terminal clubby steers?  If the percentage is not too high- could he be safe to keep heifers? Just throwing that out there...

when will the show industry start to reflect the production side?

my response to your title: "When will the show industry start to reflect the production side?" It never will.  I have watched a Red Angus heifer show at the ISF  that probably came the closest I have ever seen in my life to where the judge was picking heifers that you could take home and...

    Iowa Royal Sale

I watched some on the internet today.  I got the first bull- then had to leave and came back just as they were selling Bernie's bred heifer.  The purebred bred heifer was a deal today with the way market rates have been going for bred heifers around here anyway. I did get to watch the heifers. ...

Things to thank a Canadian for...

I am going to go backwards a few posts and ask-- Why would we want Quebec?  JIT mentioned that they bleed you dry and whine about secession if they don't get their way-- do you really think we need anything else bleeding us dry down here??? Have you looked at the state of affairs down here--...

Time For Fun - Halter Breaking Time

Not my favorite activity at all.  I do it a little different-- we tie them up for up to 2 weeks before we even think about leading.  Yes that means that I become their waiter.  Some calves over the years have been ready for leading after a week.  I feed them by hand, water them by hand and then...

    best and worst buys

:) One of the best buys we made when I took over the cattle side of the farm business-- Sqeeze chute-- sounds funny to some of you, but growing up-- we never had one and as the years went on Dad would never buy one and then the 80's came and we didn't have the money to buy one even if we wanted...

options on heifer safe shorthorn bulls

I follow my own path pretty well, just sharing an example of the speed bumps I encounter from time to time. I pretty much have given up on trying to follow fads, or the "big guys" ( no offense)  and I use what works at my farm. Small operation- treat them all like commercial herd-- low input-...
