Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

Simmyshower - yes she's nice and angular but she looks a bit tight wound for today's show ring.  They need a bit more substance and softness to compete these days.  You're likely right in saying that she'll be a very useful cow and breeding piece however.

    Best Deal you've found!

I'm as cheap as they come so I'm loving the stories though you guys are giving me nightmares with the stories of high priced busts! Here's one more of mine - Went to tour my parents herd and was walking through a pen of late born open heifers that were tagged and ready to ship off to Kazakhstan...

Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

Agreed.  No issue with her body type but with an udder like that she wouldn't make my replacement pen.

    Best Deal you've found!

Grant's post got me thinking.  What's the best "deal" you've ever found.  A diamond in the rough that you brought home and really worked out for you?  Post yours! I've had a couple but the best was this cow, Soo Line Georgina 1101Y was the best deal for sure.  Bought her for HALF of the sale...

Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

Good point.  Sometime a judge has limited options at the smaller shows.  Gotta work with what's out there.

Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

The simmy is maybe a bad example. Leather up front doesn't mean she isn't a wedge shape; just not pretty.  That's just a more traditional breed trait.  The commercial heifer you posted looks like a perfect example though.  Market heifer written all over her.

Heifer Show Winners -- "The Look"

I know what you're saying.  The line between what I would call a Market Heifer and a Breeding Heifer are becoming blurred in some cases.  Certainly it seems to be more of an issue in Jackpot type shows where it's not clear which type is being chosen.  Typically in breed shows it's obvious that...

    Been Hiding this one...

She's a late January embryo calf by SAV Resource and my National Champ cow Blackwood Lady 2T. The funny angle on the tail head is definitely a calf in the background.  She's super soggy and sweet made with thickness to boot. She'll be as massive or larger than most calves her age (she's around...

Angus heifer. What do you think?

She's at about the right stage then.  Get her on some high protein (14-15%) feed and keep her full.  She'll do fine.

    Been Hiding this one...

Here's a heifer I've been keeping in my back pocket all summer.  What do you think?  Good enough for the show road?

    Angus Bull Calf, Critique Wanted

He looks alright.  Maybe too much set in the hind legs for me and he's tighter in his heart girth than I'd like but that's pretty common in the Tour calves.  He'll change lots yet.

Angus heifer. What do you think?

Nice heifer.  She's got the pieces to get there.  Pretty green at this point obviously.  The belly and shape will come with time.  How old is she?

Really nice set of calves  (clapping) I love the 2 char hfrs.  The white one really has "the look"

    Opinions of some heifers please

Heifer #2 is the best of the bunch.  First heifer is pretty frail and looks awful straight in her front end.  Third heifer is poorly balanced.

    CC&7 bull calf

(clapping) Very nice calf.  Love the mass and substance in him.  Should be a good one for you.

Is she worth the work? Opinions

It's the old adage, "you need to learn to lose before you can learn to win."  That being said, you don't want a new kid to be last for long.  That can suck the fun out of it in a hurry.  You need to see progress form year to year.

    Summer Show Pics

Thanks Mark. In my experience the Angus genetics being used in the show ring in the US won't provide enough mass for our bull buyers so I've stayed away for the most part.  We don't have much of a show heifer market here so my show cows need to produce commercial bulls and replacement females...

    Summer Show Pics

The summer shows here in Manitoba are in the books.  We've had one of our best runs ever.  Now it's time to start making plans for the big fall shows but before that I thought I'd share some pics of the string. First Pic is CAM POLL Xpressive 012X (EXLR Total Control) and her Feb bull calf NYK...
