Where have all the readers/posters gone?

I can't speak for everyone, but can share my own thoughts. With any online forum, there is the issue of things being lost in translation.  It is very difficult to convey context unless you are a very good writer.  Knabe and AJ are perfect examples of this.  I believe that the "banter" between...

    trend of show steers

I noticed a couple years ago that the Bonham (Bobby Maddox on the Grady steer) crew was really peeling those legs tight...other than the 2017 American Royal champion steer...that thing had the big hair!  Horn's steers are clipped tight because they just aren't super good haired genetically. ...

    Market hiefer weights

Should be fine, but I would sure push her along.  It seems like it would be easy, but she is obviously smaller framed so it isn't going to be a no brainer.

    Fu Man Chu is dead

I have often wondered why so many of these club calf bulls have such a short life expectancy. Is it the semen collection cycles being so aggressive, something in their genetics, or just pure bad luck? Too bad for all involved.  Great bull.  Seems like about 60% of Goretska's steers that past...

Need help with using beet pulp

I agree with the Precon thing.  The only time we ever fed beet pulp is if we had one that wasn't eating very well.  It was kind of a last effort to just try something different to get one to eat.

Most difficult of the three major steer shows to win?

As you of course know, none of them are by any means easy. We have showed steers at KC and Denver, never been to Louisville. Kansas City is just unbelievable.  There are no fitting rules which makes the presentation of the steers amazing.  Top that with exhibitor eligibility up to 20 years...

    Market Steer Show Judging

VC, I know darn well that you guys were good feeders.  Actually, that is what we did well too.  Most of our success feeding revolved around selection.  We bought steers that were easy to feed.  We didn't buy hard doing steers, or steers that required a lot of attention at the bunk. I can't say...

    Market Steer Show Judging

I certainly respect your opinion in this post, and believe that geography plays a big part in what you are saying.  I see something quite different where we are.  Yes, there are a lot of questions about growing hair, what to feed, getting them to gain, etc..  There are very few questions about...

    Market Steer Show Judging

I guess I can't say that I am seeing that.  However, the shows I have been to, watched online, or my kids have showed at have primarily been bigger shows.  State Fairs, Kansas City, Denver, shoot even our last County Fair.  The judges have all handled every steer and some multiple times. I...

    Cool room question

Spray foam insulation is the best, because it also seals as it insulates.  You will have to hire someone to come out and do it.  It isn't cheap.  If you don't want to drop that kind of money, just go to a home improvement store (Lowes, Menards, Home Depot) and buy fiberglass insulation and...

    HELP Looking for a solution?

If she is doing this at 6 months old and has never displayed this type of behavior, what I would say she needs is a good attitude adjustment by someone that isn't in her normal daily ritual. If you know someone that has some experience around show cattle and has a little cowboy in them, then...

    Harsh water on hair

I doubt that soft water is going to do anything that conditioners won't take care of.  Be sure you are getting them completely rinsed out. I have personally never seen a water softener in a barn.

    Show calf tendon surgery

If the calf has been injured, I seriously doubt that you are going to get much for results.  Yes, I know that this is done for things other than injuries.  It is simply a cost vs reward deal and there's probably no way that it is going to pencil.  I have had it done due to injury, and it did...

    Show day drench

If we only care about their appearance, we use warm beer.  If beer isn't appropriate for the given show, we will use warm 7-Up.

    Adhesives

Weaver makes a clear adhesive that was actually designed for Dairy cattle.  I have used it on some colored cattle that were No Paint deals, and it worked pretty well. As others have said, the white comes from the quantity of adhesive you are using, not the product you are choosing.  More...

    Purina Precon Calf Starter???

Theoretically, you could feed it forever.  I certainly wouldn't advise it because of cost.

    Tony Austin

I really like his stuff.  Tony is actually on to some really good ideas.  His ideas are so different that I am thinking he is a little ahead of his time.  He did a Facebook auction on a steer a while back.  Great idea. He started doing those videos years ago, and I always respected the fact...

    Husfeld at Ft. Worth 2018

I saw the same thing you did as far as the top 2 steers not really fitting together.  Again, I wasn't there so it is difficult to really judge a show based on a 2 minute video.  Maybe those were the best 2 and didn't necessarily need to fit together?  Who knows.  It is cattle showing.  Sometimes...

    Husfeld at Ft. Worth 2018

I got a report from a friend that was down there.  He said it was a "shit show from the beginning".  Couldn't believe the number of bucked over cattle he put in sale holes. It is so hard to tell from watching videos and looking at show ring photos.  We had a steer in Denver, and the photos and...

    How to calm show steer?

You can buy it online or from a Vet Supply place.  It is a naturally occurring chemical the the body already produces.  I don't see why it wouldn't be heifer safe, but I really don't know because we don't show heifers.
