    Myostatin gene

Unfortunately we have used some E226 carrier bulls. I think the extra muscling is obviously attractive to breeders just as TH was and I bit both times :-\. As with any recessive defect it takes a few years to show up up and we had the misfortune of using a couple of light birth weight carrier...

    Myostatin gene

Yes we test all our herd bulls and any of the bulls we sell. Since we started testing we have been selling only bulls that are free of the variants. We have been doing this for several years now and last year we had only one carrier bull calf but that might have been a bit of luck. We have only...

    Myostatin gene

It's true that the heterozygous carriers have more muscle but a breeder either commercial or purebred really needs to know what they have. The homozygous double carriers definitely have issues from calving through thriftiness and require much more attention and can with the higher incidence of...

Dr. Bert Moore on "Heritage Shorthorn's Impact On World Cattle Breeds"

I saw some Lancer bulls at the 1980 World Congress in Calgary  they were long dual purpose looking bulls obviously before any outside blood. I think most breeders with integrity find the whole scenario disturbing. The fact breeders did this and then other breeders knowingly went along and used...

Our senior herd sires for 2019

The Australians have run in the test phase of IGS but they have not gone live with yet as far as I can find out. I think that is why some of the accuracy numbers on Australian animals went up though. Diamond Belvedere 29B will be collected later this year hopefully there will be some US...

Dr. Bert Moore on "Heritage Shorthorn's Impact On World Cattle Breeds"

It shows Countess's grand sire as being the Maine bull Dollar 2nd. Is that what you are referring to or was there more outside blood not shown?

Our senior herd sires for 2019

Another young bull owned by Woodruff Ranches that we were able to use on a group of heifers that were bred AI first. He is now with the Diamond Dynamite daughters. He had a 63 lb birth weight. Janell's Falcon 70F by Muridale President 33B and out of a cow by Muridale Tradition 115Y. A bit of...

    Best shorthorn cow families?

Is there an ultrasound test for tenderness? The 3 Haumont heifers we got had high marbling scans, 2 are Rosabells.

Our senior herd sires for 2019

I got it a bit wrong Mark. The front heifer does have a little Charolais in her but it's away back. Her dam was a Shorthorn x Angus with a bit of Charolais. The other heifers are out of Shorthorn Angus or Angus cows.

They did it with broiler chickens...and this article about salmon is a bit scary! Not sure a regular breeder lives long enough to create "the perfect profitable cow" for all environments...

Our senior herd sires for 2019

Here are some Diamond Dynamite 6D yearling heifers. They were born April, May last year, mostly out of Angus x charolais or Angus x Shorthorn cows. There are some nice purebred heifers by him as well. We are using a red son of 6D on a group of whites and light roan yearling heifers as well...

Our senior herd sires for 2019

I agree with his observations as well. You make a good point about the size of calves, in our part of the world most cattle will be finished in the feedlot and how they perform there really drives the demand. It is a balancing act between getting the most pounds from the cow calf operation with...

Our senior herd sires for 2019

Saskvalley Curfew 41C was a frame 6 when he was younger, I am not sure if he would still be that as a mature bull. Diamond Dynamite 6D is probably a 6.5 and I am guessing Diamond Belvedere 29B is a 7 but I have not measured them. Here are some calves by Belvedere 29B.
