manure in streams vs industry waste

I have a storm water permit for my sawmill that states, " A piece of wood larger than 1" in diameter shall not leave the property and enter into the local water system."  Think about it a 1" piece of wood.  We have terraces, netting and a run off pond to maintain our pollution, or sawdust and...

    Heifer for your Critique

I saw more than a few yesterday at Houston, close to a 150 head.  My son's stood 3rd out of 14 in Class 1.  The heifer pictured above has great breed traits and looks very nice.  Hard to criticize a picture of one standing as a champion.  If you really want to find out take her to nationals in...

    Brangus Heifer

My youngest son has a May '07 Brangus that will be in Houston next week, she was a class winner in Fort Worth.  She also throws her head when you first put the halter on, that just comes with the breed and young age.  When we get her stalled at the show she settles because of a more regimented...

How many people actually own a scale?

I bought a set of paul scales and silver king working chute on e-bay 1989 model, that had been stored inside and was spotless for $2000.  I have been offered $5000 for it, it is one of my favorite pieces of equipment.

    Fixing catfish- any ideas?

Only one way to do it.  Let fillets dry on paper towels, salt and pepper to taste, roll in yellow corn meal fry in vegetable oil at 325 degrees.  When fillets float and meal is golden color remove to paper towel tray.  Here is a helpful hint, any red or grey colored flesh remove and this will...

Here we go again!!! Winter isn't willing to give it up yet

Hot, cold, hot, hot, hot!  I am looking out the office door and it is snowing in East Texas, it will not stick though it is only 35.  By Sunday it is suppose to be back up to 72 for a high.  The steers are enjoying it, they did not have to go in the cool room today.  Three weeks until show and...

    anyone show brangus???

My youngest son shows a May '07 Brangus heifer that won her class in Fort Worth.  He will be in Houston with her on March 19 for Jr. Brangus show.  I like the looks of your calf.  Where did she come from?  We will pick up another heifer for the future.

    Showmaster Feed $

In our area of East Texas it is $11.90/bag, it is good feed but every year takes a tremendous price hike right before the majors start.  We feed the grower, had bad luck last year with the finisher, it was too "hot" and the calf burned out.  We feed our heifers Pilgrim's Pride Fitting Ration and...

    How big are Friction calves?

My oldest son has a Friction steer out of a Simmi cross dam.  He has great length and structure and currenly weighs 1300 lbs. on a medium frame.  There is a picture of him on an old post "Going to Fort Worth" if you want to look at him.  From most of the calves out of him I have seen he throws a...

    big enough??

My cool room is lined with 3/4"x4'x6' horse stall mats to ease the stress of being on cement.  On top of this I have 8" of shavings, for the most part the calves spend most of the day laying down.  I keep them tied to the low rail as if they were stalled at a show.

    Warning! Topic may get heated!

Our Ag. Teacher requires our students to have a minimum of five Thank you notes written before the sale, he then writes down the buyers of the steers for the student so they can address them.  After tying the steer the student proceeds to distribute the Thank you notes during the sale.  After...

    big enough??

I have a cool room that is 8x8x14, big enough for two calves.  Drainage is important so that you do not have excessive ammonia build up.  There are several factors dealing with a cool room that are very vital that have not been discussed: 1.  Fresh air fan - this is set on a timer to pump fresh...

    Going to Ft. Worth

If you get the gate, you hear the wailing and gnashing of teeth outside of the arena.  The most common thing I heard was, "Oh well, we will slick him and head to San Antonio."
