    Ideas for manure disposal

I have a really old ground drive manure spreader parked next to the barn. It's so old and small most people use them for decorations in their farm yard. I think I gave $200 for it at a goat farm sale. It can be pulled with about anything and one of the 5 settings for the floor chain is very very...

Can We Get Some "STEER" In Steerplanet

Two rings is normal, but I don't remember it being goats. It might be that this is the first time I've been sitting at home watching a screen pointed right at them to see how the steers react to them. Either way, there were some really good steers in the ring today. There were some very very...

Can We Get Some "STEER" In Steerplanet

Having a goat show across the fence from a steer show of this magnitude just seems like a bad idea. I've noticed multiple kids miss their mark and have to circle after their steer noticed and reacted to the weird little creature across the fence that they've probably never seen before.

Your thoughts on some Shorthorn AI Sires

At one time I'd romantically ramble about head size, shape, and the old breed character you can see in an animal's head. Probably still will from time to time and have culled some alligators I just didn't like to look at. As time has gone on, I've found the one trait animals absolutely need to...

It's always the good ones. I don't see a location, and it could be any number of things, but Lepto and anaplas ran wild in some areas last fall.

Can We Get Some "STEER" In Steerplanet

It's always nice to see a strong sale. I'm not able to see the sale figure in a few of those steers, but it's nice to see some Wynne In Doubt calves. He was one of the few bulls I found interesting out of that peer group.

    Angus heifers?

They need to carry some frame, extension through their front one third, some performance, depth of heel, and milk if you plan to keep them. The best calves have come from shorthorn cows, but I've only had a few out of maine angus cows to compare them with. Primo threw more muscling than Creed. I...

Anyone ever successfully IVF'd a cystic donor?

As far as I know, DFR is still a physical procedure done when flushing traditionally. You're basically draining the dominant follicle similar to aspirating the ovary during IVF. If I was you, I would be concentrating on IVF. If treatment shows you can get a window of regression on the cyst, I...

    Angus heifers?

I would imagine California is a whole different deal when compared to the midwest. Would it make more sense to take the top tier calf budget and divide it up into implanting eggs for the next year and running a middle tier bargain this year? If people are nervous about show cancelations, I would...

Your thoughts on some Shorthorn AI Sires

I have a couple cows out of a son. They're not the best looking animals on the place, but they have some size, mother well with functional udders, and have raised some really nice bull claves. If I had left the nuts on them they would have been purchased by commercial cow men. Have had a couple...

Is there any breed whos main attribute is it's junior heifer projects.

Chi about has to be on the list. An that's only if you consider less than 10% as still being in the breed. A lot of people overlook the fact that kids who show a certain breed as a Jr have a way of coming back later. It might be after college or even after retirement, but they often go...

Your thoughts on some Shorthorn AI Sires

For me, 127x stands out from your list as being different than the rest. I would consider him to be more of the growth bull in the bunch. A pair of his sons here were very well accepted by commercial angus breeders. I retained a son of his to use on heifers and then sold him into a herd to lower...

    Myostatin gene

I guess it depends on how you define "double muscled". I've yet to see a shorthorn present as double muscled in the way we tend to think of the Belgian Blue cattle being double muscled. They've taken the presentation to the extreme. You can see some Shorthorn x Limousin calves that look pretty...

    Myostatin gene

If he is out of who his pedigree says he is, they are both carriers. There's also the possibility that they are more than carriers.

    Interview with Tim ohlde

This bull was out of leader 21 and I believe a cow 2 or 3 generations before JPJ's mother, so I guess it'd be most of the good stuff and none of the cross breeding. Have had a few crossbred AI calves by him over the years that were just ok, but never a heifer. They did grow much better than any...

    Interview with Tim ohlde

I still have a couple canes of semen from a roan bull Ohlde raised out of one of the Cal Poly Cumberland cows he bought back. They had bred and flushed that cow to some interesting bulls. Ohlde then chose to make pairings that I'd consider to be much more complementary.

Looking for a feed / ration calulator / balancer - or help with my ration

It's not a full blown least cost analyst, but the OSU ration calculator is free and easier to use than the higher end programs. It's about 2/3rds the way down the list. http://beefextension.okstate.edu/pages/calculators

Is there a test for homozygous polled for Shorthorns now?

It is not in the package deal, but you can add it on the ASA test sheet as test letter L for $27 just like the Myostatin test is letter K for $27. See if this link works.... https://shorthorn.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/DNA-Testing-Form-Fillable-2.20.pdf
