    Shorthorn History Buffs

Enjoyed the read. I've been kicking around the idea of using Director on some pedigrees that appeared to mesh well in the past. Not sure how well the progeny would fit into today's markets, but good working cows always have palace here. I have two et calves out of a dover cow and a son of 26a...

    Black shorthorns

Turning your herd red is becoming popular here too. If the Durham Red deal hadn't been ignored the breed would actually have a dancing partner during the shift. Hindsight, yet unfortunate. I see trouble brewing in this shift as well though. The people shifting to red are doing so because of...

She is a Super Flag daughter. You northerners continue to post some ridiculously deep cattle.

    Black shorthorns

I don't have the urge to do it, but I think someone with time and the right marketing desires could have some luck by "fixing" the blue roan gene into a "new breed" of Angus x Shorthorn cross. It basically already exists with another breed, but it doesn't have the blue roan image to tie to...

Rose of Sharon family and Baron Victor

I have a list of old stuff I try to casually watch for, be it semen, eggs, or cattle. I often find myself running into the same familiar names when bidding on some of it, which is a positive to me because they generally know how to use it while others obviously don't. Perhaps I don't either, but...

    2018 Herd Bull Line Up

No, one was out of a Taylor Made 7Y an the other a Saskvally Imagine 65x. If the better of the two comes back Myostatin free he might get to cover red angus cross cows though.

Red angus bulls for shorthorn cows

Can't say I've tried the Pieper bulls. I do see some names in their bull pedigrees that I like. The Packer S008 bull left some really nice daughters here and I noticed him on the bottom side of some of their bulls.

Red angus bulls for shorthorn cows

I wouldn't be afraid to give Right Kind or Tradesman a try Kibler. I have had good luck with Andras New Direction on shorthorn x angus and red angus females. I've tried a couple of the big numbered Beiber bulls and didn't get along very well. Terrible udders and long toes have led all but a...

Red angus bulls for shorthorn cows

He threw mid 60lb calves here no matter what I bred him to. They need time to get going growth wise and do not handle a heavy milking cow very well for a few weeks. They are very vigorous at birth though. Considering his numbers, growth was underwhelming last year and is consistent this year as...

    2018 Herd Bull Line Up

I think you're on to something with the Kookaburra bull and am looking forward to his data hitting the system. I've only had two, but I put Belmore back into a few of my better cows this year after seeing the calves. Both bull calves weighed 76lbs.

Unfortunately, fescue tolerance has to trump absolutely everything here. It can cull harder and faster than the most aggressive of cowmen. Anything near a 2 is belt buckle to me and even a 3 is hard for me to look at. I personally don't have a problem with frame 4 - 1250lb cows, but the open or...

site...PROMINENT HERITAGE (NATIVE) SHORTHORN BULLS BORN PRIOR TO 1985

A cow that looks similar to the one you brought out of Canada with some tweaks would probably work. Frame 5.5-6, a big wide top, good depth, and correct hook/pin set, a good calving interval over 6 or 7 calves while still carrying a good udder, all done in a real world working setting and not a...

The variation in type and kind as you go down the list is interesting. I believe I still have 7 of these bulls, but I see two or three I wish I had. One of these days I'd like to find a couple "native" cows being kept in normal pasture conditions that just blow me away.

What's on the ground so far?

That's one source I've never heard the stories from. Recently acquired some semen on a bull he created using a Poly Cumberland cow who was a daughter of Dividend. Too many bulls not enough cows, but I'll get some used soon.

Sent you a private message. These two are a fresh set of Dividend x Improver/924 bull calves.

    Shorthorn influenced cattle

Enjoyed the read. I strongly agree with this one specific point. I've always thought the roan gene should have been the marketing concept the breed used. Instead, people got behind trying to turn solid in an attempt to hide and slide under the radar as a solid red something. Reminds me of sheep...

    FULLBLOOD MAINE UPDATE

I've never asked about the AI bull requirement without the 50k included, so I'm not sure. Here's a link to the current dna form... https://shorthorn.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/GeneticTestingForm_Fillable_2.19.pdf I have done the high density testing on a few head as well as the low density...

You'd have to call into the association to be sure, but if he has the TH and PHA I think he'd just need a dna sample on record and a DS test.

    FULLBLOOD MAINE UPDATE

Yes. I believe Yukon needs his Genomics/defects ran in order for the Shorthorn Association to allow his calves to be registered. I'll have a hand full of bulls in this crop that need developed so if he keeps progressing well he'll get thrown into the pen with them.
