    Bulls siring larger frames

Sorry to burst your bubble, but of the initial group of shorthorn heifers that I bought, the last one standing (because she was the only one to rebreed and calve on time every year) was the biggest cow. When she went to slaughter she weighed 1720lbs. The others were 1200-1400lbs and not a single...

    Bulls siring larger frames

This is very true. Also, controlling a heifer's diet as she develops in the first couple years has a significant impact on her mature weight. Taking away the grain was a great way to sort through those that can cut it and those that can't, props to you, Beebe. I'd still bet if you put the grain...

    Firewater vs Outsider char bulls?

Honestly couldn't tell you, they were commercial cows that we just had the AI tech use cheap simmi and cheap Char semen. We didn't record the specific sires, only the breed because we were jumping from breed to breed in order to maximize hybrid vigor.

    Firewater vs Outsider char bulls?

We tried this cross once about 3 years ago and got a rat tail. It's still out there in the common AI sires.

    Bulls siring larger frames

Not necessarily the size of the cow, as Gargan also pointed out. There are plenty of 1600lb+ cows on those canadian operations. Grazing year round has a lot more to do with available landmass and grazing management. Sure, you can run more small cows on the same space through winter if that's...

^^This. Even 1000lb cows need something to eat in the winter.

    Heifer Calf Feeding

What are your goals with the heifer? Is it going to be a show calf or is the goal to have a productive, long lasting cow?

    Bulls siring larger frames

There's a difference between "inputs" and "supplements" Hay is an input and all-but-required in a lot of places (particularly in mountain areas) Grain is a supplement. If you weren't so hell-bent on attacking other people you might take a moment to consider the differences.

Anybody know anything RE Hereford Bull DB Grandslam?

You do see the bull at the top/subject of the discussion is a Hereford, right?  :o

    Shipping after breeding

This is a question that seems to arise from time to time, so I figured I'd share an article from Genex that I saw today. https://genex.coop/understanding-the-effects-of-stress-on-embryonic-mortality/ Short version: shipping before day 4 is *probably* fine, but don't ship or stress them out from...

    Got Milk?

I'll second this. We have one fresh heifer Muridale Murango x JSF McCoy who's a pretty low milker, but her bull calf has been milking out another heifer who lost her calf. Then I have another young heifer who I saw 5 different calves nurse from her in the span of 10 minutes.. the son of the low...

    Best Charolais bulls for temperment

I'm not a Char guy but I feel like I've heard the same on Firewater. I've had 1 Wrangler calf out of a docile cow and he was nice to work with. Also finished out very nicely for a "calving ease" bull

    Flatbed bale beds

I'm not very mechanically-minded so I appreciate the ideas! Thank you!

    Flatbed bale beds

I don't think I've ever seen one on an auction up here, let alone on a truck.. but I really like that homemade spear idea! Does it come off the truck fairly easy, and would the design still work on a flatbed? We have a bale loader attachment from an FFA chapter that doesn't fit my dad's new...

    Flatbed bale beds

I should probably add some details. I'm located in MN, so we deal with snow drifts for 2+ months and mud for another 2+ months on pretty decent sized hills. However, I don't anticipate growing to over 50 cows in the next 5 years; currently the goal is expand to 30 in the next 2 years...

    Flatbed bale beds

Wondering if anyone on here has recommendations for flatbeds or bale beds that they've used and liked or disliked? Features that I should look for or avoid? I'm on the fence if I want a bale bed with the spears or unrollers: or is the bale moving equipment is just a waste of time and money...

    Pregnant heifer in heat?

Early is relative. Probably less than 21 days from the loss, but they don't lose it the day they're bred.
