    Thank you Malinda

Thanks everyone. Be careful what you say; the Wells humility thing you know. OH B it was certainly nice to get to meet you and talk cows. You have a vision of what you want to do and a solid plan for getting there. Best wishes. It's always good to have a fellow Pepsi lover to share a cold one...

a cow will make you pay...vaccination alert

Yep Red, I know I did wrong. That is why I capitalized it. My local vet is the one that said the calf from a few years ago 'probably' died from a bowel obstruction. We even talked about that calf this morning. I think he realizes we both goofed on that one. I don't blame my vet; he gave me his...

a cow will make you pay...vaccination alert

I won't go into my whole vaccination program  but I want to alert you about a train wreck I had here a couple of weeks ago. First and foremost I am not a vet. DL will have to help me out on this one. I am just going to relay what my vets have told me. I saw a 7 day old ET heifer nursing the...

    My Steer has no Appetite

This may sound way off the wall and out of left field but it happened to me. I had a heifer go off feed and did everything I could to get her back on track. I washed her feed tub out really well one day and she ate  well for a few days then stopped again. I washed  the feed tub and sure enough...

    old shoe

The people you get to meet, the friends, family sharing and memories is what it is all about. I agree CAB. I would like to share what has become my favorite all time fair memory. One year two sisters showed up at our county fair with the two worst steers I had ever seen at our fair. Now, back...

    old shoe

Well, when this topic was first started I thought long and hard about posting but decided I better stay out of it. But, since it just refuses to die I'm in. I have been beaten by good cattle and I have been beaten by politics. I have won some I earned and won some I got away with. But I know...

Best wishes to all our American friends

Well said Justintime regarding the economy... anyone remember who said 'We have nothing to fear but fear itself."? So I do think all the negativity hurts everyone. But some of it does make you want to stick your head in the sand. Have a good day all, Malinda

Our 2008/2009 county fair steers (finished photos)

Hey Nasc, I had to do a double take when I saw your chute. I have one exactly like it. Aren't a whole lot of those left. You can't lift 'em but you can't kill 'em either. Please take this as just a friendly word of advise: With the head catch on those chutes not going all the way to the floor...

What do you do with a calf that died @ birth?

I leave the calf with the cow for 1 to 2 hours.  As soon as I see that she is loosing interest I know it is OK to take the calf out. I think this really helps the cow. I have seen newborns that just lie (lay there? ain't no good with grammar) and the cows will get less and less interested and...

    need advise Re consignment sales

Our Ohio Shorthorn Assoc meeting was yesterday (Sunday) and pulling consigned cattle out of a sale was discussed. We had a very long discussion and several suggestions were presented. In the long run no decision was made. We had a lot of topics to cover and it was getting late. Since the next...

    need advise Re consignment sales

Thanks everyone for the input. I appreciate all comments and opinions. Getting this information to the board meeting should be easy since one of the posts was from another board member. I left my OPINION out of this initially, so everyone could post their thoughts without my having any...

    Quick help steer planet.

Hey StillLearning, Do you live in a Selenium deficient area? You might want to talk with  your vet and see if he/she thinks the calf needs Bo-Se. Glad you got the rascal on the ground alive and hope he gets turned around quickly. Malinda

    need advise Re consignment sales

I am a board member for the Ohio Shorthorn Assoc. A member of the assoc has contacted me with some questions and concerns. I would appreciate your input on this matter. Here's the deal: You consign an animal to a sale. You send in your entry fee and all other requirements. Then, you sell the...

    Who's going to NAILE

CM, I have never personally purchased steers in Louisville but know of some deals over the years. Be sure the seller is reputable. For a couple of years (and several years ago) there were RUMORS flying around about doctored calves. Just do your homework on the seller. Be sure the seller can be...
