    Pohlman's sale

Hey SRU, Hay in my neck of SW Ohio has gone from $2 to $8 for square bales and from $25 to $100 for round bales. That is if you can find any. Makes me glad my cow numbers are down. Have neighbors that have sold all their cows because their wells and creeks are dry. Lots of people hauling...

    % Protein to feed heifer

Showsteer mom, You are about to find that I am old fashioned and out of touch with reality. Guess I would really need to know if you are feeding replacement heifers or show heifers. For my replacement heifers I use a 12% feed with good old corn, oats, molases and a mineral pellet. There is...

    Anyone go to Cates?

Thanks to everyone for the nice comments. They are appreciated. I do want to make sure everyone understands I did not own the lot # heifer; she was from an embryo Cates owned. My name is not Cates, so there is no way I could ever sell a heifer for that much!!!! Yes, the heifer did get a top...

    Anyone go to Cates?

Thanks Red. The lot 1 heifer is the first  and only heifer calf born at Cates out of my DZ cow (picture on my post). She is a Bloodstone and brought $45,000. My first DZ/Bloodstone calf is the heifer I sold to Jake Boyert. She was 3rd in a class of 11 at Jr. Nationals and was champion at the...

here's where the jury matters, not the lawyers

I smell more than one rat here. He was 'moments from death' and his emergency room bill was only $700. You can't pee in a cup in the ER for less than $700. If he was 'moments from death' why did they drive him to the ER instead of calling 911? If he was 'moments from death' why did they...

    cooling off calf

ShortyJ13, Sounds like your calf might have rain rot. Just scrape off the dead hair/flaky skin and use a Betadine shampoo. Make sure you get ALL those areas really dry. Hope this helps and good luck. Malinda

    shorthorn bull sale

Hey Ohio Breeder, KK is about 5 miles from me, but I have not actually seen him near the road for a while. Just going on what his owner thinks he weighs.....2,000 lbs. He is absolutely sound. He has the best hoof I have ever seen on a bull and  have NEVER been trimmed. As his owner says: "He...

    shorthorn bull sale

When i found out that CF King Kong was a THC I sold him to a neighbor. He is selling him because he now has breeding age replacement heifers out of him. KK is a former national champion out of GF Myrtle Bo and Trump. He is a 2002 model but is still probably the most sound and free moving bull I...

    How did you get here?

I have always told folks that farming and cattle go back so far on both sides that I just don't have enough sense to do anything else. I'm 4th generation on the paternal side. The three previous generations were livestock dealers. My Dad was born in Kentucky and he and my grandfather used to go...

    Best fair memory ever!

This story must have begun about 40 years ago. Two sisters showed up at our county fair with two steers that were way under weight. The calves were clean but they had NO hair and had obviously never been grromed other than bathing. These two girls had no idea what the routine was and it was...

    Hay

Hey Red, Good to talk with you this morning. Forgot to tell you we had rain so close last night that I could hear the thunder, but didn't get a drop of precipitation. Adams County is the next county south of me and they are officially on the severe drought list. We are 7 inches short of...

    Congradulation to Greg Ruehle.

Guess I am going against the grain again, but here goes: About 10 years ago I had trouble getting the ASA to call me back, delays in getting papers, etc. But in the last few years I have had no trouble. I called the ASA today to ask Shirley a question. She was gone to lunch, I  left a message...

WHOA WHOA WHOA Red, I am sure you did not intend to put all Amish in the same pot, But I just can't let the bath comment go. I have lived near and in the middle of Old Order Amish, Old Order Mennonites and Mennonites (the car driving, electricity type) all my life. I have Old Order Mennonites...

    old habits

I was out bedding with straw this morning and got to thinking about how many things I do a certain way and only that way. Here are a few examples:     When I bed with straw I break it up a certain way; not too much but just enough. I will only bed to about 18 inches from the wall, to keep the...

    Coccidiosis

Hey Mike, I agree with the above posts. I'm not a vet, like DL, but here is where I woild start: get his temp take him off the grain give him Sulfa boluses wait 72 hours after the Sulfa and give him Probios slowly reintroduce the grain If this does not do the trick, call your local vet BUT...

    the Angus 111

Hey Angus 111 I was beginning to think you were a figment of my imagination. I looked for you in Denver, but even Josh said he had never seen you. When you went AWOL, we should have started a rumor about the Witness Protection Program or the CIA. Glad to hear you are still up and about and...
