    Boss Blowers

I have a Boss Magnum and a single Sullivan Express III.  The magnum has great power and heat, works great when needing to dry a calf fast.  Need to plug it into 2 different breakers to work best, we usually plug into generator. It takes up less space than the Sullivan double.  In the summer, the...

    Star Lake Herefords Dispersal

Based upon the dialogue in the ACE topic today, not sure I want to reply but I believe Charolais are number 3.  Annual battle lately according to them between the Herefords for #2.

Sexed heifer semen on first calf % Maine club calf heifers

I am thinking of breeding this years heifer calves to sexed heifer semen.  Genex is our main supplier, but can use others.  The heifers are 3 way cross % Maine club calves.  Any recommendations?  Angus, Sim, SimAngus, Maine, or just breed them to a calving ease clubby bull?  Planning on keeping...

    Breeding

What do the donors of the heifer recommend?  I would think their opinion would be the most important.

What would you breed them to?

Thanks for the comments so far.  I can see the advantages of using 1 or 2 bulls for inventory management and herd management.  I can also see the advantage of using a specific bull for each one.  If only breeding were that simple!  ;)  Full sibs can look very different, much less total...

What would you breed them to?

    1)    Budzy -  4 yr old Golden Child x Mossy Oak cow, THC, phf, has good bone, hair, muscling, very correct structurally, lacks spring of rib.  First 2 calves out of a line bred Northern Improvement bull that are nice, just a little light muscled.  Bred to I-80 this year. 2)      Darla - 2 yr...

    Feeding Syrup

Have not done it personally but know of people who are doing different things with syrup.  Some are grinding cornstalks and spraying syrup on them as they re-pile the ground stocks.  Very bulky process.  Another has rigged up a sprayer to spray syrup on stalks he is running his cows on.  He...

breeds getting carried away! after watching the expo

When searching for a hunting dog a few years ago, many breeders told me there is more variation within a breed, than between breeds.  Probably true with cattle also.

Interesting reading on Sullivan flyer !!!!!

I have heard from friends who are feedlot owners that they do not care for shorthorns due to scheduling of butchering time.  They have told me the challenge with SH is they aren't finished, aren't finished, aren't finished, then they are too fat.  When the cattle buyer may not want the cattle...

    cuts of meat

It comes from the short plate.  Ahead of the flank, behind the foreshank or front leg.  If brisket = chest, short plate = diaphragm  when comparing beef to people.  I knew where it was located and had a hard time verifying it on the internet or finding a picture actually calling it by name. Cut...

Could also be worms.  Had this happen and had vet culture it, verified worms, not cocci, could be either one.
