    Shorthorn Genetic Problems

I believe everyone here would agree that single trait selection is a horrible idea.  We must seek to balance traits.  When completely eliminating carrier animals from the gene pool we are essentially performing single trait selection.  When looking at population genetics for a breed as a whole...

Odd problem with barbed wire fencing???

I have seen  this before in South Alabama.  Based on my observations it is caused by the t post not having as good a rust inhibitor and when it oxidizes it speeds up the oxidation of the galvanized wire.

    Shorthorn AI Certificate ?

I understand that there is money to be made selling AI certificates.  However, in my opinion some of the prices on "popular bulls" is not so much about making money as it a way of controlling who uses those genetics.

    Shorthorn AI Certificate ?

I think the move is a good one.  I personally believe that the volume of Shorthorn semen sales will increase which will offset the lost revenue from AI certificates for many bulls without increasing the semen price.

    Shorthorn AI Certificate ?

I received a pm asking if I wanted more info about AI certificates, so apparently my question was vague or lost in translation.  Therefore, I will attempt to reword my previous post. In the past to register a calf from a Shorthorn AI sire, one had to buy an AI certificate.  The rules  have...

    Shorthorn AI Certificate ?

ii. A.I. Certificate: As of June 1, 2015, owners of A.I. bulls may declare their bull either an A.I. Certificate required bull or a non-A.I. certificate bull. Once a bull has been declared a non-A.I. certificate bull, the status will remain permanently. If required, an A.I. Certificate, properly...

    Simmental Bulls Input Requested

I agree they grow really well.  How have the heifers turned out as far as temperament?  The ones I have seem to be just a little nervous, not too bad but just enough I have been cautious about using him again.

The few good ones were adequate.  However, the majority  did not milk well.

Xbar my comment about Mel-bar Rodeo Drive 347 being a more terminal type bull had to do with the performance of daughters, than frame size.

Our experience was Mel-bar Rodeo Drive 347 was pretty much calving ease, with tremendous growth.  I think he had/has  a lot to offer as a terminal sire.

I was playing around with some pedigrees last night and trying to figured some matings out and I Realized I had forgotten that the Scotty cow pictured in the beginning of the thread is out of a linebred Mel-bar Rodeo Drive 347 cow.

Shorthorn Bull Opinions DRC 101VM (Dover) and RS DV 034 329 08

Thanks to all for their knowledge, input and civility related to the topic; I hope this continues and the discussion is as good going forward as it has been. For those interested, I am planning to do a little linebreeding using Scotty, Osage and 2109 off of some of the better females ( part of...

Shorthorn Bull Opinions DRC 101VM (Dover) and RS DV 034 329 08

Ya'll have given me a lot of food for thought. and made me rethink some of my choices and parameters.  Keep that part coming. I will restate that I am looking for commercially oriented cattle that are functional. I would really like to hear the pro's and cons from some who have used the bulls...

Shorthorn Bull Opinions DRC 101VM (Dover) and RS DV 034 329 08

Reasons in selecting these two bulls 1. Trying to select Red moderate bulls PHA Free, TH Free and DS Free but mostly PHA-F and TH-F 2. Calving Ease more that Birth Weight (both bulls in top 10% for calving ease) 2. Maternal Weaning (puts both bulls in top 40%) 3. Maternal Calving ease (puts...

Shorthorn Bull Opinions DRC 101VM (Dover) and RS DV 034 329 08

I have only used 2 Waukaru bulls Waukaru Carnegie and Waukaru Goldmine 2109. But they have been pretty consistent.  Good growth, good milk.  I do not have any females left that go back to Carnegie.  I made some poor breeding decisions early on with too much focus on growth and not enough on...

    Creekland Lancer

Just based on the picture, I would have a hard time saying.  He is standing in deep straw and very little of his structure is visible.  Would think he is easy fleshing.  Weight and size wise really had to tell if he would be considered moderate or too small.
