It's been well over 20 years since we used melatonin and we trying to take the edge off of a couple of calves. You'll have to research what levels are necessary to help with hair growth. Good luck  :)

I don't really have any advice for you feed wise but I think your friend was meaning the fat pones that appear around the tail head when a beef is possibly getting too fat. It is a good indication of when one is finished. Once a young beef puts on that kind of cover it is tricky to get it off...

This is JMO but I wouldn't hesitate to feed it just because of high protein content. You could counter that by feeding some feedstuff with lower protein content and higher fiber if it bothers you.
