I would think that high of protein level would make a calf have a lot of diarrhea.
Feeding extra fat would a better idea, IMO.

feed of that high protein, IMO would maybe be fed to add meat to the calves... but would burn any fat off.  It also would make them quite runny- and not with their legs!

They also could be feeding a 28% suppliment, and mixing it down to a respectie protein level...  That wouldn't be out of wack.

My guess, could be they were feeding some kind of a super high fat ration- not protein

or you miss understood them...  Caught the wrong part of the conversation.

But then again, I'm not super up on my sale calf feeding...maybe I'm wrong

My guess would be they said or meant to say they were feeding a 28 percent supplement not ration

I go with farwest.  They must have meant supplement, not ration which is kind of what you would give cows on low quality pasture or hay.

I also agree that they must have been talking about using a 28% supplement to add to your feed to bring the protein level up some. Feeding a 28% feed is not only wasting protein but also going to cause problems with keeping your calf on feed properly.

I have sold feed in the fast, so many people that are jsut clueless talk about how high they want there protein level as if the higher the better.  Just as everone else said, it will just go in one end and out the other along with everything else.  Tubs are just a piece of what they will get as a supplament, adding to there diet.  it doesn't mean that they will be consuming a 20 -30 % protein as a whole diet.

thanks guys, my father had overheard the conversation and it made me curious. One thing they also said that it would make the meat taste bad but they where selling them anyway and it was a quick way to make them bloom for the sale.  ::)
