We have Gelbvieh right now. If I was to add another purebred breed I would probably go with Red Angus. The Red's work as a compliment to the Gelbvieh if you were running a Balancer program, plus I've always liked the Red's more then the Black's from a phenotype standpoint. It'd be much easier for me to stomach having more Red animals walking around than Black's.

Realistically, if I was to add a second component to our operation, it would probably be Club Calf cows. I think there's definitely a market to be cracked up here, plus the calving and pasture situations would work out ideal for us and our commercial cows.

Already have Shorthorns, a couple Mainetainers, a couple Chi-x, and are very much involved with Lowlines (even though we only technically own one)...so I think the next breed we would add (and probably will) would be Red Angus too...using Red Angus bulls or buying RA females would allow us to double register calves as Durham Reds and ShorthornPlus.  I've seen some flat awesome DR's, and my dad has always loved the RA's.  Super maternal and gentle from my experience, and I've seen some RA females that I wouldn't want to show against.

The Charolais look like to me are going to have a lot going for them in the future, especially if any one really started trying to make a program of the composite's like the Fink ranch in Kansas . an still have the show ring option.

I'm going to make everyone gasp with this one....I'd add herefords.  My first job managing a farm out of college was on a hereford farm in Kentucky and I've always had a softspot for them.  My little boy really wants his first 4-H heifer to be a hereford, but I cann't see daddy going for that lol.

I've made the statement to my dad before that if I were to add another purebred breed, the Herefords would be on the list. The problem in our part of the country is that the Commercial breeders are so color blind, there is hardly any market for Hereford bulls here.

Last night, while playing around on this marvelous machine, I discovered a black Murray Grey bull. I didn't know there was such a thing. I like the fleshing ability, moderate frame, and maternal of the Murrays, but wasn't sure about the grey color. This black bull is interesting. It has me thinking.

Well, right now I raise Black Angus.  I would probably do something wild......like Red Angus!  ;D  In all reality I have thought about adding a couple Reds to my black herd.

I suppose there are a couple of options.  I would go with either Simmy, Maine, or Red Angus to compliment the shorthorns.

We now have mostly Angus but also a sprinkling of Simm-Angus and Charolais.  With many of the commercial cow calf producers in this area feeding out their own calves,  These three breeds give us most every thing we need from a commercial bull selling standpoint.  They also give us a great female, base for an occasional club calf project. We try to keep enough "look" in our cattle along with the performance to be competitive in the show ring.

I'd go with British Whites. I saw some of these cool looking moderate frame loving animals and have always wanted some.

If I was going to be more practical then I would go with Braunvieh. Would make a great cross with our Angus (both red and black).

I think it used to be real hard to do a 2 breed herd deal. You needed two sets of herd bulls or cleanup bulls or whatever. Now with the balancer, appendix shorthorn,Durham Reds,maintainers,limi-flex, and whatever....it is easier to be involved with several breeds. There is some flexibility with clean up bulls and whatnot now. You could get away with say 1 cleanup bull.

I like to thinkwe've developed a market for our "oops" calves :)

I'll have to say that as a RA breeder I'm a little surprised by how many have listed RA as one of their top picks for a 2nd breed. Good to know we are being atleast noticed! RW

I'd have to say Maines. I've got a Black Impact dtr here , that I really like & I've been seriously considering buying & using a black Maine as my cleanup bull.
