I have seen this a number of times at shows and most recently at the Shorthorn Junior Nationals in Indianapolis and then the Ohio Shorthorn Association State Show this past weekend. What does everyone think of this practice? What are the benefits and negatives?
My opinion is that this is a very bad way to run a show. Why would you want the breed prefix and the exact calf to be named for the judge to know who bred the calf and maybe even remember the exact calf and how much it sold for? Maybe the judge has a personal problem with a particular breeder and they want to settle the score by not using a calf that is bred by that person? Anybody know why shows are going this route?

I think it's a bad idea for the same reasons. If you are at a big show then you have a program to look at . If you are at a smaller show usually somebody around you knows what a particular animal is. I think it will tend to give the judge a chance to be too prejudiced. JMO

Anybody who's ever taken a "bad beat" in a 2 calf class, will absolutely hate this practice.  That's all I'll say.

I'm not a fan of it.

I like it when they announce the top 3, 5, or 10 in a class and just say who it was. If I want to know more about the calf I can look it up.

I suspect if a judge is going to halter judge, he'll have his ducks in a row before hand, and probably isn't paying that much attention to what the announcer is saying.  Usually after the first couple of calves enter the ring it is hard to keep track of which calf they are talking about without the list in hand anyway.  It may be the only time some of these kids ever get to hear their names called out over the PA, and why shouldn't the breeders get their props?    I always liked hearing the RMB prefix announced and I guarantee it never gave anyone an advantage!  lol

At Angus Junior Nationals we made sure the no pedigrees were revealed until after the Champions had been selected. Also, I am pretty sure our kids were instructed not to say the animals name in classes, only once the division winners were selected. People have show programs they can get the information in there.
