First, I really hated to see McCoy go down with the injury. I would've rather seen Bama beat them with all their guns. Hats off to the Longhorns and their freshman QB ( he will be good someday) they fought hard and made it a game. To see McCoy's  interview at the end of the game was moving - still giving credit to God ...... and standing on that Rock through it all.  Bama won with D and the running game like they always do. Saban is a great coach and his teams always come to fight. It has been a great football season and I still think the best team ended up on top. Seven months and change till we can do this all over again.  GO  (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog) (dog)

It definitely would have been a different game had McCoy played, but I still think Bama would have won.

Nick Saban clarified what a dirt bag he is when he chose to run the score in the last 1:30.  I am hoping within a year, the program will be under investigation and he will go back to the hole he crawled out of.

Not a McCoy fan,  but probably have to admit that bama would have had hard time winning with him playing.

Glad the prison system gets TV.... at least ingrams dad probably watched the game. Its not like he was working.....

My critical take....remember i was hoping that they would both LOSE!

Saban....very cheap to score at the end.  Take a knee and show some class....Suppose he had money on the game and needed to cover? :-\

Alabama overall:  I was impressed with their running game, but their defense sure didn't "wow" me....Their inability to put Texas away, playing against a quarterback that might not even get PT on a bottom-dwelling MAC team, was very surprising.  If they were the deal, this should have been a blowout.  Ingram did look good, but was surprised he showed as much fatigue with the limited number of snaps he played; don't think he was in even 40% of the plays.

Alabama quarterback was probably the most "average" QB to win the national title in the last 20 years.  However, he did not make the big mistake, which was key.  Sure don't think they could've counted on him to win the game if he needed to, though.

If Alabama is the best the SEC has, I say bring'em to Lincoln and let's line it up....

Mack Brown; another purely bonehead move by not taking a knee to end the 1st half and give up 7.  Realize if not for this, UT took the lead after their last score....First his colossal time mis-management in the Big 12 Champ. game, then this move.....makes you wonder.

UT's defense was salty at times and porous at times.

A somewhat entertaining game, but I doubt either team gets brought up in a "team of the decade" discussion.

Cool when Saban got smoked by the Gatorade cooler; those guys need better technique!

Wish the college football season started again next week; appreciate the chance to discuss it with all fellow SP'ers.

McCoy National Player of the Year...Please......

I knew it was over when McCoy left for the locker room.  If for not the mistake at the end of the 2nd half, Texas might have won this or at least would have been up 21 - 17 instead of down 24 - 17 in the 4th quarter.

Good game.  If you would have told me that TX would loose McCoy and have to rely on a true rookie to come in.... I would have put money on tide by no less than 30, but they stuck it out and kept it a game.  TX defense showed up for the most part.  Gave up some costly runs and left the hanky on the carpet more times than they should have, but didnt roll over when they could have easily.  The Gilbert kid showed some machismo in the second half!  Started to play with a rythm that many seasoned QB's have trouble finding in their Jr Sr years.  Surprised bama came out so ... tentative.  Thought they were suppose to be the world beaters this year, but didnt impress me much.  I am not a Saban fan.  Really comes off as wanting it for himself more than the players or university.  Really good "political" interview on field after the game ended.  There were some nice pops in the game and the boys were stickin, but the best hit could have been the gatorade cooler to the head n shoulder area of Saban!  Classic.  I would not be surprised if he makes spring ball fun for those boys!  Thought ECU might have found them a place kicker to recruit from bama until he dinked the last PAT.  Surprised Saban didnt go for the duece!  Nice guy that one is!

Yea, this would have been a completely different game if McCoy hadn't gotten hurt.  What a stage for that Fresh. QB though.  It took him 2 and a half quarters to get it down but WOW as a Big 12 fan the rest of the Big 12 had better be scarred with what we saw out of that kid.  Also very glad that the NY tax payers gave Ingrams dad a chance to watch his son play football.

Texas used to be a soft team for years under Mac.  No more.  Their defense came to play.

I dont have a problem with play call at end of first half.  Playing with one hand tied behind your back, you got to be aggressive if you want to win.

Good game on both ends.  I hadnt watched Ingram before.  He's good.

Chambero,

Agree that Ingram looked good, but I totally disagree with the play right before the half.  Wasn't like they were going to score anyway.  Take a knee and minimize the margin going in.  Of course you don't ever assume that play will happen....but you take a knee so that it doesn't have a chance to happen!

Davis Shorties,

Granted, he's a true freshman....but, he looked even less prepared than most true freshman would be.  He seemed to be a very one-dimensional quarterback, which a good defense will destroy.  (Surprised that Alabama didn't as the self proclaimed "best defense in the country")  The thing that made McCoy a weapon was his dual threat ability.  I don't see that from young Gilbert.  He'll probably grow to be a good pocket passer, but if he can't move the pocket too.....my worries are minimal.  Certainly won't be Colt or Vince.  He did find somewhat of a rythym, but still made a few rough throws down the stretch.  If you take away Shipley, the UT receivers certainly aren't a sure handed group, which didn't help him.  Look at the recent top quarterbacks from the Big 12; most of them had the ability to use their feet as well....which made them tougher to defend (except for Bradford and the TT boys).  Perhaps Gilbert has that, but didn't show it last night.

Gilbert was the second highest rated HS QB in the country last year and he is a true freshman.  I bet his momma hated watching him get thrown in the fire like that last night.

The only thing I'd question is the fact that Texas had plenty of games with legitimate mop up time that they could have gotten Gilbert experience in.  Instead of utilizing that playing time, Mac used it to build up Colt's stats for his Heisman run.

About the only weakness for Texas in recruiting over the past few years has been having a solid backup QB around and it finally came back to bite them at the worst time.  Jevan Snead could have gone down in history as a hero last night if he wouldn't have been such a wuss a few years ago.

Gilbert, the young qb for Texas: He is a TRUE FRESHMAN that spent the ENTIRE year BEHIND McCoy. How much "practice" time do you people think he got? Not to mention playing time, since they always played McCoy to get his stats up.
Here is a kid, that never got the time of day in practice from ANYONE and all of a sudden "super star mccoy" is injured and he gets thrown in with a pat on the a$$ and a "got get'um son". Yep, he made mistakes. But lets point the finger where it needs to be pointed: The coaches for not preparing him during the year for the fluke time he might play due to mccoy injury, and lets point HUGE fingers at the receivers who DROPPED THE PASSES this qb delivered pretty much on the numbers.  Do you blame mccoy when the receivers drop the pass? Nope, you blame the receivers, and that is who actually cost Texas the game last night.  Go back and watch the game, count the number of dropped passes.....
Gilbert will be a great qb for texas when mccoy gets out of the way and the coaches give this guy some direction!!

(All this from a person who is NOT a texas fan!)

I have to laugh at Mack Brown's blunder late in the first half.  He go to the locker room here, and very possibly texas win's this game.  the kid ain't gonna be throwin deep in territory in the fourth quarter when he got blindsided if their ahead.  They'll run and kick and let defense win the game.  They were playing great defense if not in a hole. Oh yeah, very impressive move by sabin to score instead of runnn it out.  Surprised he didn't throw one to the end zone on the last play.

I hadn't paid any attention this year as to who was McCoys back-up!  Texas has there pick EVERY year of the best QB in Texas!  It SHOCKS me that the Horns back up QB is a TRUE Freshman!

One would think that but it hasn’t really been true lately.  Recruiting depth at QB has been the only weak spot for Texas this decade.  They got Gilbert last year but essentially sacrificed their 07 and 08 classes in order to do it…

08 was a relatively weak year for QBs in Texas.  That year, they didn’t sign a QB because they wanted to increase their shot at Gilbert in 09.  (They did the something similar with running backs in 09 in order to after Lache Seastrunk this year.)

In 07 they missed on Ryan Mallett, the top prospect in the state.

In 06 Matt Stafford went to Georgia and they got Jevan Snead who jumped ship because he didn’t want to ride the pine behind McCoy for four years.  They didn’t even offer McElroy that year.

05 (red-shirt seniors this year) was supposedly a lean year for QBs in Texas but Chase Daniel went to Missouri and it’s the year they signed McCoy, their lowest rated QB recruit out of high school in quite some time.

In 04, supposedly the best year for QBs in Texas in recent memory (and a year that any QB signee would be the heir apparent to Vince Young) they lost out to Bomar to Oklahoma and Stephen McGee to Texas A&M.

Gilbert is actually the first time they had their pick of the Texas QB crop since Vince Young.

Will be interesting to see how Gilbert developes.  Last night I just wasn't sure that he has the wow factor that some young guys have.

Yes, it is a pity that coach Mack and staff didn't give him more reps through the year.  If he wasn't so green, he could've probably won it last night.

Mack made plenty of blunders this year.

Scott,

Buddy, why didn't you tell me that cow kicked you in the head? You should share things like that with your friends. We're here to support you.  They say amnesia is usually temporary. Do you realize Tom Osborne is gone?  ;D

If Alabama is the best the SEC has, I say bring'em to Lincoln and let's line it up....
