We're entered (two steers and a heifer), but not sure if we are going to go or not.  My mom picked last week to get her knee replaced and now she's camped out with us.  Kind of afraid to leave her.  Been so busy at work we don't have our calves as ready as we ought to.  We'll probably make our mind up this weekend.

The Belt Buckle is a very good show to go to if you want an honest assessment of where your calves stand.  Even though its really hard to win a breed, if you can stand in the top five or six in most of the larger classes, you'll know you have a real good chance to make a major sale.  Some of the calves that win are never heard from again, but plenty of the champion and reserve breed champions show up in the magazines next winter.

i know what you mean, Champion at last year's FC was never a champ.

but my first place steer got reserve overall at my county ( dont judge county fairs my fair has about 5 bonham steers in it every year including multiple copus steers )

Copus rules!  (lol)

County fairs ain't what they used to be.  Nearly all of them are plenty tough now - even the smaller ones.  There are lots of good cattle running around.  Nobody really knows what they've got till you run them out at a show like the Belt Buckle.  They may look great to me in the barn, but I've "overestimated" a few lately.

Too many political and ulterior motives at that show to get a fair shake anymore.

If it is like that now, it was the same 20 years ago. Aren't they all? Still, there are a lot of really good animals.

In my opinion, it's probably a little easiser now to sneak into a breed or reserve breed champion now than it used to be just because there are more good calves now to be had.  However, if you want to play hard in the exotic breeds, you almost have to have a really good throw-away, old steer that more often than not will run out of gas before the majors.

A long time ago, the Belt Buckle champions had quite a record of going on and winning Grand or Reserve overall at one of the majors (i.e. Brandon Horn's shorthorn from way back, Vicki Priesmeier's Woody steer (still my favorite single steer of all time), and several others (Rash's, Jeffries, etc).  It's not that way any more.

It's next week Telos - progress steers on Thursday the 2nd, prospects on Friday the 3rd, heifers on Saturday the 4th and Sunday the 5th...

We'll be there sometime Thursday and on Friday.  Anyone that wants to meet up shoot me a pm and we'll figure something out.

Yeah its the politics that I have heard of! Good cattle that win majors hit half way up the class, and cattle that never win go on to win the buckle... I am considering going to the Fall classic with this heifer, but we are pushing FT worth and wouldnt want to risk anything. I agree with you cattleking...galv. county had a pretty nice selection of steers...im alittle surprised on how the Reeders steer did tho. I did see her class so i didnt know the reasoning...he was awfully good tho.

The belt buckle brings out alot of good ones and the great ones more often than not rise to the top. Those of you crying about politics might just need to buy or raise better cattle. If you want to be the best you have to beat the best and the best ones will be there. As far as cattle kings county fair, it is a very tough one to win and he had a nice calf last year. It will be even tougher this next year I promise you that.

I have never seen the buckle so I really would not know about the politics first hand, but I have heard from folks that have raised and bred plenty of champions at major levels about the politics. I would like to see the breeding heifer show at GCFR get bigger..

Go to the Belt Buckle, its like a political convention in the Heat of Texas Arena.
I Love it, and hate it at the same time.

the belt buckle is a politicial show. and rarely is there a steer go on to win a major, that wins that show.
i think the guadulepe pecan clasic in seguin is the best prospect show in the state of texas.

also, i live in galveston county and the two calves that won were good. but the best steer didnt win!!!
