I was wondering how infusing Braunvieh genetics would work in a Shorthorn appendix program. I was thinking Doc Hunsley encouraged the appendix program be used to infuse say broader genetics. If Braunvieh would add a shot of marbling along with disposition, milk and maternal excellence. You develop a line that would produce a great purebred Shorthorn bull for marbling after grading %'s back up. Any body tried this cross? I would think the first cross.....color would be terrible. It would take a lifetime to get bred back up in percentages.

aj,
We're using some Braunvieh sires this fall...mostly over solid black or brown(diluted) ANxSimAngus cows... but have bred some ANxSH cows - red and black - to them, as well.  Will be interesting to see what sort of color we get...brindling is a distinct possibility from the red and red-carrier cows.

I have been thinking a lot about Braunveih x Shorthorn and there is some of that going on.
You'd want the best beef Shorthorn genetics available on Braunvieh cows then cross the F1 heifers with another Shorthorn bull from the high marbling bloodline. Close breeding, but not suffocating heterosis.
But why try to breed it up to "pure" Shorthorn? The Braunvieh component is integral to the blend and I would Stabilize some kind of 3/8:5/8 percentage.
I don't understand introducing all the Braunvieh traits just to wash them out.

I don't remember when the American Shorthorn opened up the appendix deal.......but I remember stating that it would be a way to incorporate new genetic blood plasma. In theory IF you could decide which genes were the marbling genes of the Braunvieh you would keep back females or bull that had this gene concentration.....the get the population back to a purebred status.......essentially robbing a trait. A flawed analogy would be something like incorporating genetic defects like th in a Simmental population through a grade up % program. The plan that you mentioned would work also......setting a % like the Brangus did.
