My Vista PC is in the shop and I have borrowed a laptop.  I am able to view the videos from cattle.com  Freddy now has his videos up for his fall calf bid-off and I can't get them up.  The file is .rar and a few other types and this laptop is a Windows Millenium,  is there a free download that will work?

Below is a link to the Fred Ranch bid-off: Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

I'm no expert, either, but I went to the Fred site and also tried to view the videos.  They are Windows Media Player compatible, or are "supposed to be" but although I downloaded them to my Mac, on which I have WMV installed and have used successfully in the past, these videos from Fred won't open.  The message says they have compressed using a "codec" (whatever that is) that is not compatible.  So, if anyone else has had luck viewing them, let us know.  Otherwise maybe someone who know the Freds could check with them to be sure the videos have been prepared/formatted properly.

I imagine that you just have old software on your PC.  Millenium is Pre windows 2000 so it has been around for a while.  I would look for some free versions of Windows media player as an update.

RSC,

Cattledog is right, the version of windows media player on that old of a computer doesn't know about this file format.  I also don't know how far it will update but you can try here...

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/9series/default.aspx  This will get you to version 9.  I can't remember when they added .wmv.

Sometimes the "codec" doesn't come along.  It is the piece of software that converts the video files (like DVD's) to computer viewable files.  In the older versions of windows you had to pay for these.  The laptop you are using probably has a CD drive not a DVD drive, so no codec. (Computers this old usually didn't play DVD's well anyway......

Use this link only if you get a Codec error after downloading the first one or if you are already on version 9 of WMP (it shows on startup)...

Cows are less confusing.
