I have a shorthorn cow that just had her 2nd calf. I bought her bred about 8 months ago and the seller who was honest and said she had a 120lb calf as a heifer that was one of the hardest pulls he has had. I got a good deal on her, so I bought her. She had her 2nd calf a little over 10 days ago (Had calf on March 30th) which was a moderate pull with a handle and chains by myself, no puller and she was standing up but had been pushing for a 1 1/2 hours with little improvement. The calf was a 100lb calf, shorthorn calf and nothing clubby. She is having small amounts of vaginal bleeding and nothing major as it dries up and then you see a little after she urinates. She is a good cow that milks very well and I like her calf. I don't know why she is having such big calves but was going to breed her on another shorthorn bull I seen in Denver this year Talledaga which had a 90 lb birth, nothing she has not had yet as far as birth weight, but that is another topic. But should I be concerned about the little vaginal blood or should I be contacting my vet? Don't know if she had some scar tissue from her hard pull as a heifer which was ripped open from this pull, but not large amounts of blood just little drips after she urinates that drips on the ground, probably 10 to 15 drops. Don't know if it is dried blood inside that is coming out when she urinates or if she is still bleeding slightly. Don't think she will bleed out, just concerned about infection setting in. She is acting normal as she is eating and drinking fine while walking around and letting her calf nurse. Anyone with information is appreciated.

Discharge after calving 10 days ago would be nothing I would worry about.

i agree, i ve some cows that have bloody discharge for 2 weeks or so afterwards. i assume its just part of the post partum cleaning and retracting process.

This is a personal opinion, but TALLADEGA would not be my first choice in reducing birth weights ........see his sire CE -13.9  and BW EPD +6.9. 2012 would be the first year for calves on ground I think.

What is the breeding on the cow?

I don't know her breeding off had but she is a registered Shorthorn that was bred from the guys ranch stock so I don't know if people will know her sire and dam. I look on her registered paperwork. As far as talledaga he can't be much harder than a 120lb calf as a heifer and now a 100 lb calf for her 2nd. I look at the bull's registration also when I get home who is the sire of this 100lb calf I got. But this will be her 3rd calf and she is a large built cow. Should handle Talledaga.

I thought you wanted to reduce birth weights? It is not so much the weight but the SHAPE of the calves. I have had 120# calves that slid out of first calf heifer. I had a c-section last month on a 88# heifer because she was a square block trying to fit in a round hole. Interesting to seee what the breeding is on your cow.

Ok paperwork from the American Shorthorn Association shows my cow a red roan as having a sire of WR UNO Bonito (roan) who was a (SIRE) Shouflers El Bonito 104X ET (roan) BY (DAM) AR SU LU MAMIE 020 (red and white). Then the dam of the cow is DDET Meg N90 (red and white) who has a (sire) of Oakview Double Mint (roan) by (Dam) Shalimar Princess Meg 090 (red). Then the bull of that the calf (Red and white) is sired by AR SU LU Massive 3140 (red) out of a dam of BSG Monica 322 DOC (Red). The cow shows a 3.3 Birth EPD with her sire having a 3.3 and her dam having a 3.4. Then the bull of the calf showed a 2.7 Birth EPD with his sire having a 1.1 and his dam having a 4.2. The cows registration number through the association is X4159726 if you want to look all of her pedigree up.

Thanks Frostback and Gargan for you response on the bleeding. Thanks OH breeder for your response, she is a big enough cow that if she has another 100lb calf, I am not worried as she has had 2 both being pulled, I will just watch her close. This heifer she had was BIG in bone structure, so it was more her build than her weight why I think she had to be pulled.
