Hey Knabe -- yup -- this is a Belgium web site.

Check out the cow standing behind the bull in one of those two front page pics. I clicked on that picture as I could not see it too well, and then  a whole raft of them came on the screen small.

I reclicked that same picture and it opens HUGE. Clearly -- ARRRGGH -- the cow standing directly behind the bull wit hthe hairy hump has a pretty fresh ZIPPER -- you can see the stiches cleary from her c-section!! Good grief -- what good advertising is that?????

Sure glad we all do a better job advertising the Maine breed over here -- I would never picture a cow with a zipper -- I wouldn't hide the info, but she ain't gonna be on my website!! hehehe

Good smile from me -- unfortunately!

OMGoodness, well, I have this phobia about sickle-hocked cattle.  There was one cow on there that was so bad that I think if she were in my pasture I would shoot her to put her out of her misery.  I don't know how she could even walk.  Some of the cattle were kind of interesting.  Fun to see how the breed has actually evolved.  But for the most part...EEEEEEKKKK!

Those double muscled animals remind me a lot of the Belgian Blue Cattle.

It also makes me wonder if that is the way most cattle over in Belgium look.

Yep...A lot of people forget that some of those first Maine imports had a double muscling issue. I have only seen double muscling in Maine cattle once in the last 6 or 7 years. It was out a flush and all 3 calves were double muscled.  This genetic characteristic was kept fairly quiet in the beginning and breeders have done a great job breeding it out.

Knabe very interesting! Funny how we see these doubled up critters and we roll our eyes! I was not aware of a double muscle in maines(not a maine guy persay) but am not surprised in area this site comes from Read an interesting article from farm bureau lady on tour in Belgium couple years ago that helped my understanding-most of beef is sold as veal in europe due to rules on keeping bull calves intact hence double muscled mamma's to produce veal with muscle and of course calving problems. All calves on the tour farm were taken c section mamma lasts about 3 calvings then they eat her as well.per farmer which would you want for hamburger young cow or bull??! My unterest is peaked now that I see dm maines-do they have same genetics in other breeds over there as far as double muscle? Do they cross blues into other breeds or develope the double muscle intra breed? SAw a double muscled shorthorn last summer that was almost painfull to look at (that bull calve did not stay intact!)

here's another double muscle link found on another site

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nmkj5gq1cQU&eurl=http://cattletoday.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=46100

nads looked pretty small.

clip job seems opposite of club calf.

i wonder if there is a partial penetrance of this gene

also interesting is the lack of correlation of bone and muscle
