This little girl was born today, just a few hours ago.  87 lbs unassisted.  Mama and calf are doing well.  She is our first for the year.  We are so glad the weather is going to be better, 38 degrees, this weekend and the first of next week.  We are expecting several more.  We are thankful she is here and well.  See what you think for being new!

Nicely filled out for a newbie and looks strong!  Nice!  What is she?  (Yeah, I know, she's a heifer!)

She is an ET  calf out of Premium Blend and Hilgo Proud Lady.  This will make her a 3/4 Simmy.

Has anyone had problems with premium blend calves? Because we had one that was never really healthy and were treating it and was on a recipt charloias cow with great milk. But ended up dieing and we have no clue how. And also a neighbor has a premium blend calf and he says that he always has to give it shots, due to runny nose or not looking good.

Sounds like the cruddy weather is bad on your calves or you and your neighbor need to get on a vaccination program. What you mentioned would have nothing at all to do with an AI bull

Calf vigor can be related to the sire, especially if the birth weights are big.  More likely the calf did not receive adequate colostrum from the dam or the colostrum was of poor quality.  We like to vacinate our cows a couple of months before they calve for scours, respiratory and blackleg.  That way, they are more likely to pass the immunity on to their calves through the colostrum.  I still keep a bottle of Mycotil in the truck and use it on anything that looks droopy.  Any kind of stress--hard calving, weather, handling--can make them more suseptible to disease.

Nasc,
No I haven't heard about that.  You would know more about it, that is your part of the country.  Let me know what you hear or know.  If not we will definately see you and your clan at your fair.

When we used to bottle feed Holstiens we would put an egg in the bottle to help scours and usually if you did it two feedings it would clear them up.
