Just wondering if anyone feeds free choice mineral to steers and heifers starting at weaning? We stared giving the steers and heifers free choice vita firm mineral this year and have noticed that they really went at it for the first couple months and have now slowed down but havent stopped eating it. They see to have better apetite and better hair than we have had in the past and the heifers have started cycling at 7-8 months old.

We keep free choice high mag breeder booster mineral from Vita Ferm in front of everything, steers, cows, replacements, everything. Seems to be working so dont plan on switching. For the backgrounding groups, they get regular high mag from Vita Ferm.

Can't say enough about Vita Ferm minerals.  I worked for a vet for several years that was also a Vita Ferm dealer.  When we could get our clients to start feeding it properly, they never failed to come back and tell us about the difference it made in their cattle.  I'm sure proper feeding of any good quality mineral would yield similar results.  Personally, we leave it out free choice year round for all our cattle.

Free choice mineral that includes salt is one of the best management practices you can use regardless of stage of production. I like the chelated minerals best for the cows during breeding and the vita ferm fits well during high roughage months. It is an expensive way to feed salt, but the salt will really enhance intake. Bottom line is that it works and makes us money with better reproductive performance and more efficient gains.
