First off, let me apologize if "genetic defect" is no longer the "politically correct" term, but I didn't know what else to use. Now, to the point: Is it worth having your cow herd tested for defects (in our case TH, PHA, DS) so that all calves will be free by pedigree? I feel like I've got the cows I want to use as a base for developing my herd, and I don't have any reason to believe any of them are carriers, but if you were starting over would you test all of your foundation stock? I figure if they are all clean, and I only use clean bulls, then I'll never have to worry about testing for sale requirements as long as no other new defects pop up... and if they do then I will deal with them as they arise. I should mention that I would only be testing 4 cows, and it will be a few years before I purchase more, otherwise I plan to expand by retaining heifers for now.
