this is my home raised calf out of a gert braunvieh cow and a sim angus bull. calf was red up until today and i walked up to him in the pasture and started clipping him (very sweet temperment) and he turned tiger stripe. we had plans to run gert points but feel that may no longer be possible and have to swap to simbrah. 1. what breed do you think he would go best in or class as. and 2. how do you think the calf is growing out and slicking off as opposed to the baby pics i posed a while back and 3. is  that brindle better or worse than say black or red. i kinda like it personally. snazzy

he is a dec 18th

Showstopper im not sure simbrah would be a shoe in either but there are a few that color that get in, but he is definitely a neat colored ABC deal.

This is my opinion, and I obviously disagree with a lot of classifiers and they are all different one day to the next anyway. At the Houston barrow show, I watched 2 of the 3 classifiers kick a registered, obvious Chester to the crosses.  I mean this pig should classify anywhere anyday as chester, the only concern is maybe his ears are a little small.  But these 2 red chipped him and said he had skin pigmentation, this one is about as white as I have ever seen one.  That registered Chester went to 6th in the Heavyweight crosses the next day, and the Chester judge told the little girl that he probably could have won the Chester show.  Those 2 classifiers later told the other classifier(who white chipped the barrow) that they screwed up on him.  So its really anybody's game any different day.
But that being said, here is my opinion.  I wouldnt classify him Gert, but personally if I was classifying him, I would probably pass him as a Simbrah.  But like was said earlier, he sure is cool, even if he has to go to the ABCs.

thanks yall, i was just in awe as my little red calf turned to brindle in one day with clippers. i think we will 'try' simbrah and just see if we get tossed out or not. and if we do. .  . .so be it, he will run abc all year.

- appreciate yalls responses  <beer>

The color pattern is not a problem if you want to run him Gert because any color or color pattern is ok but looking at the steer I think he fits the Simbrah look a little better than the Gert.  The majority of the good Gerts we show against tend to be a little cleaner fronted than the Simbrahs and this steer seems to have a little more dulap than I feel would fit in the Gert show.  Calve is really gaining well and coming on nicely and I cant wait to see him in person.....

BTW that tiger stripe came from the Braunvieh influence

Yes he is a little wastier than a lot of gert calves now that you pointed that out. Never paid attention to it. Plus if he's simbrah we may not have to stack him up against your gert walker lol

Also, if you setting your goal to win a breed buckle I think the Simbrah would be the way to go.. over a 1000 pts difference in the two.. not that I'm a point ho or anything  ;D

haha no that was in consideration also, the only killer was showing against those paints and yellows with a plain red calf. but now that we know what we are working with, color descrimination is no longer a problem.  steer points are hard to 'trend' as opposed to heifers because it just depends what mood people are in at the time they designate a breed., like next year so- and so may set their mind on so and so breed. and then never show in that breed again after that year. heifers- everyone stays the same breed

I think thats a hell of a calf, especially for having ear in him!  I don't have a lot of experience with eared cattle but I think you should do well with him regardless of the class he falls into.  You go, showstopper! (pop)
