Going to be breeding a couple of heifers this year and was wondering which bull to use they are both listed in the Semex catologue at the same price and same comparable birthweights. Some pros and cons on each would be appreciated.

I think that if you can wait for a short period of time B4 you have to decide, a bunch of SP members should have a sampling of Joe's coming so we can let you know how he works on our heifers. Brent

Just because BW's are the same doesn't mean they are both easy calvers. Not sure if I've ever heard of Tyson as being an easy calver.

Last year's Tyson reports were not very encouraging frmo where I was. One calf in Illinois was over 150 pounds froma hfr - (Shorty hfr) -- both died.

Several more from around the country well over 100.

Can't say for sure yet on Joe -- but I will have 5 at least in March -- 3 from hfrs. Not worried a bit, at least not that I'll admit to ! hehehe

Will let ya know

We used Tyson on on some second calvers last year.  We sold a bunch of the females we bred him to in a sale, but we did have one Tyson calf born this fall out of a 3 year old Meyer grandaughter.  Small bull calf that is a legitimate steer prospect.

I guess in my opinion you would breed them for 2 different outcomes.  Tyson to me is more of a clubby bull where Gigolo Joe is more of a breed type purebred bull.  What are you wanting in your calf?  If you're strictly going for calving ease I usee Joe.

I hope Joe works on heifers!  I heard he did so I bred half of our heifers to him, the other half were bred angus.  The hiefers that look like they have really big calves in them are all bred angus.  The calves are all due the 17th of Feb so I should start seeing them soon.

I guess i've never looked at a cow or heifer and thought she had a bigger calf in her than the one beside her, too many other factors that could weigh in i would say.  What would be wrong with using who on heifers, calving ease, good females, clubby bull, or is there too much risk of them being a dink.

I would just like to add my two cents for what it's worth.

We used Rocky Balboa this year on two heifers.  Both calved extremely easy (calves ran approx. 50#).  Calves are great clubby calves too! with lot's of hair.

Romax,

We used Gigolo Joe on Hereford x Shorthorn cows this year and our birthweights were between 85 - 95 lbs (Of course, our Canadian winters tend to add 10 pounds to an American birthweight), as does using him on cows. I wouldn't hesitate to use Joe on heifers, as they were moderate enough in their bone size and were pretty consistent in type. The semen quality was also excellent (AI'd nine cows and got nine calves). I've attached a baby calf pic, although its pretty early to judge them yet!!!

Another bull who's semen is marketed in Canada and we have had excellent sucess with (We breed ALL our heifers to him every year) is Daines Thriller. He is a purebred, homozygous black Maine who's calves average about 84 lbs at our place (We've probably calved out close to 50 of them by now and they've ALWAYS been born easily). They get up and chase the heifer around the pen about 20 minutes after being born and we've had some highly marketable calves out of him. (Attached a picture of the steer that was Reserve Champion Prospect steer at Agribition last year - He was a Thriller steer).

I don't know much about Tyson yet, but I would also be interested in hearing BW, etc. on him. We are a bit more limited in what we have available up north, which makes finding the right bull that much more difficult!
