come to find out our old rambo cow calved last night and damn it was a big one, 130 pounds and a butt to match. she can't stand up. been trying all evening with the Boone poll and straps. she definitely isn't paralyzed as she can move them feet when she wants to and even tried to charge us. we picked her up then slowly dragged her in mid air with her feet dragging the ground.... haven't given any drugs, any thing we should give? and how long do you guys do this "rehab" before you give up?

I'll start this by saying.. Call your vet.  but I'll bet the drugs they will recommend are banamine &/or some dex or other anti-inflammatory.

Our downer cow took a week or so to get up.

My Sonny cow did something kinda similar last year. We just kept trying to get her up every day and took real special care of her for about 3 days, and he has been just dandy ever since.  I'd call your vet for sure though.

I've seen some cows go a week or so before they finally got up.  If she's a good one, I wouldn't give up for a week or until she really started going downhill.

RE drugs... FWIW, my Vet told me that any shots should be given in the first 12 - 24 hours & anything after is not going to do very much good.

Hope that it all turns out OK!

yea she is a pretty good one, we have 4 daughters from her back in our herd. another we kept died last winter for no reason, she's right around 12 years old. btw the calf was born dead :(

i want(ed) to breed her back for one more daughter this year before she gets to old, don't know if that will happen or not

Zach - a down cow is a medical emergency and what you do the first 24 hours is CRITICAL - call your vet ASAP - DL

I would definitely contact your vet. I had a cow that was down after calving, but the next morning she was standing and has been fine ever since. Who was the calf sired by?

I'm sorry to hear. Did she take a turn for the worse? We have had them come out of it completely (after 2 weeks down) and others that tried harder but never got up. Seems like the older they are the less fight they have in them. Hard to lose one that way.

yea she got a lot worse. she was laying fine and occasionally sitting like a dog then i checked her the other day and she was on her side and couldn't roll back up and stay that way. flys were getting her bad, her hair on the hips and butt was gone and rubbed raw and flies  were eating her and her butt was coming out. raining like the jungle for a week straight out here didn't exactly help either.

livestock = dead stock

she was better than 10 years old and was the best cow to come here, we still have 3-4 daughters in the herd. one died for no reason last winter.

Haven't been on SP for quite awhile. Zach I am so sorry to hear this. Seems like these things always happen to the good ones.
We have lost two calves, and one cow this spring. We almost lost our Golden Child heifer Tuesday evening. Her calf died during birth.It's been a tough calving season.
