If you are worried about your feed troughs being too high just feed them in rubber feed pans on the ground.  You can find them at Tractor Supply and most full service feed stores.  A weaned calf can eat out of anything from ground level to 24 inches or so.  Just be sure to stay away from feed troughs intended for horses--the are too high for young calves.

I feed in just a normal trough the bottom is somewhere between a foot-1.5ft off the ground. Some believe feeding on the ground will cause them to break behind their shoulders, however if you think about how many cattle are feed on the ground of the cooler day in and day out, it kind of puts that theory to shame.

Funny, my cows eat grass off the ground. Not sure about that break behind the shoulder thing there! Might break behind the shoulder because they are long spined.

I always thought that it was just something that you said about cattle that were underfed and you pointed at them and said another victim of "high trough disease"  as in the trough was up too high for the cattle to get any feed - and I really think that is all it means -  ;)
