Was just flipping through the new show circuit today and saw that Lautner is promoting a bull called Highlander.  He is a Scottish Highlander X Cunia EXT.  Interesting to say the least.  It looks like he's got some pretty good hair....  It says that he is polled and I know Highlanders are horned and I'm wanting to think Cunia was horned, not for sure though, so I find it a little odd that this bull would be polled????

just guessing but i assume that it is a Highlander bull on a cunia x EXT angus cow.  so the cow would be polled and the resulting calf would have a 50% chance of being polled as well.  obviously it would only be hetero polled.

So this leads to the discussion.  Is there way too much emphasis on having hair?  I know that a calf with hair looks good and easy easier to hide faults and we are talking about the show steer thing.  But in a practical world we don't eat hair.

We have a much more difficult time getting the heifers and cows bred that retain their hair.  Missouri with it's relatively hot summers and fescue makes it hard to get these hairy beasts bred.  I want a heifer that is is productive after her show career and showing is hard on a replacement heifer anyway without adding the heat stress issue.

how are Highlanders on growth? Structure? Rate of gain? or are they just a hair breed?

I thought of mentioning this a long time ago...so I started a new thread.

I don't know about growth or rate of gain, but they have excellent carcass quality, are very hardy & feed efficient.

I think after the 1000 bucks in vet bills I am sticking with the proven bulls and leave the experiments to some other folks. Dusty let me how that guy works out for you. SHould be flashy. No not fleshy, flashy.

i think the highlander bull will boom. low bw as advertised, no HW, HS , WMW or anything in his pedigree, he should have good carcas qualites as being half highlander out of a cunia angus cow. And  to the hair  O0 O0 O0 O0 O0

I really like the looks of the bull. As far as frame scores and such, there are people at our county fair that show a few of them each year. They are small framed, but seem to have a good disposition.

If I am not mistaken that bull is from some breeders in Michigan, maybe williams show cattle or something like that.

Since Dusty brought up the Longhorn bull (probably as a joke)... (However, I'm not joking about this).... We actually used a Longhorn bull in the late 80's, the same Longhorn bull that was used in the old Merril Lynch commercials & we used him naturally on our first calf heifers!  Never pulled a calf & they weaned off 450-550 lbs..  Not the thickest or fleshiest or growthiest or the hairiest calves, but they had color & horns...   ;D!  Seriously, I wasn't fond of the idea of crossing with a Longhorn at the time, but I thought that it worked out pretty well & it certainly beat pulling calves.  However, that was way before I even knew what a Lowline bull was.  Lowline >>>>> Longhorn.  ;)

What do you call the calf when you cross  a  Longhorn and a Shorthorn?  I'd really appreciate it if someone could give me the the "long and short" of this situation!!
