Don't fall for it. Look for another calf.  Unless you can get the price reduced alot and just don't mind putting up with the sloppy neck.

It won't shrink up. If this person is telling you this, what else is he telling you that is not entirely accurate?

We have had luck with a VERY LITTLE Bit of a sloppy neck tightening up with a sweat collar but not enough to compensate for much...stay away

It all depends on price.  Don't think you are ever going to get the perfect calf with zero faults for a reasonable price.

Sweat collars do work.  That's why they've been around for the last few decades.  They won't make a really bad necked one look great, but you rarely see many calves with that bad of a neck anymore anyway.

If the calf is in your price range, go look at him.  Don't slam the guy for not BSing you and telling you he's the greatest thing that ever walked.  Frankly, I'm overly critical of my own cattle and I know a lot of people that are the same way.

Little extra in the neck never backs us off on a fat steer prospect.
Usually the ones with a little slop in the neck feed out easy and convert real well.

He might not do well at prospect shows where they want the freakish necks but in the end at the fat show he should out do a majority of the skinny necked hard feeding Freaks.

Also some will grow into the extra leather, couple that with a solid routine on the neck sweat program and it could work out for you.

Here are some photos of my daughters 09 steer
You can tell in the first photo he has a little extra leather in the neck and he was criticized by many as being his biggest flaw.

The second photo is how he looked when finished out.
