a heifer i sold had money man twins last night unassisted.  they are out of a legacy plus heifer by a direct midas cow/power plant on the bottom. the heifer is a twin herself.  the mother easily raised those twins.  heifer is homo black/polled, probably homo solid.  they were 1 week early.

both up nursing.

i'll get pics shortly.

Congrats on the live calves.
Whats with all the twins, seems like i hear a lot of people having twins. I guess its a really good thing when it works out right, but is this something we want to breeding for?

here's a couple of pics.  both calves are up and vigorous.  they are jet black.  about 20 hours old.

maine's as a breed have a high twinning rate, 5-6% supposedly.  the heifer, er cow, is a twin herself, 68 lbs at birth.  these bulls are a little smaller, probably like 55-60.  the heifers bag is not near as big as her mothers, but is decently square.  would like to see rear teats be a little longer.

thanks, she has a funky triangle head, a little point in her shoulder and a little tight in her rear pasterns.  nice topline, ok thickness.  since they are out of a midas cow, i was interested in her mothering ability.  gotta say she came through with flying colors.  the guy said she had her calve probably in about an hour and a half.

as for twins, the commercial guy probably can't handle it.  when the heifer was a twin, they never got any extra feed nor did her mom other than a little grain the first two weeks.

i switched to fall calving so skipped a half year to calve when it was drier, hoping for smaller calves and some grow in them when it greened up here.  a lot of calvers out here are doing the same thing or have already done it.  some do it to reduce respitory problems from dust out here.
