Hey all,

We are getting set to flush one of our top donors who is a constant producer for us. Her calves can be seen at our website www.diamondmshorthorns.com under seedstock for sale (Orchid heifer).

Anyway, we are trying to decide to flush her back to a proven mating ArSuLu Legacy or switch it up and breed her to Monopoly or Ace of Diamonds?

Therefore, I need some input on either of these bulls. I heard Monopoly calves basically sell themselves and the ShorthornPlus deal is pretty hot right now.

However, I also have heard that Ace of Diamonds' calves are really outstanding.

Any help would be appreciated.

We will have calves on the ground out of this mating next September. Would that be soon enough, and do I have a standing order?

She is very clubby, as she is a TH Free Kool daughter. Her full brother and sister were all-Americans for us. This girl had her ears frosted off as a calf, so obviously she never had a chance to make a run at it.

Ace needs to be bred to stout cows maybe, but not necessarily clubbie one's. Phil Raisback sold one at Cedar Rapids 2 weeks ago out of a stout cow "not clubby" to Bob Duis for 6100.00 I have seen alot of AOD calves at Hi View Shorthorns, and they are not out of clubby cows, because they don't have any. Monopoly needs to be used on longer spined females that has some bone. They don't have to be the real deep kind at all. Upper moderate to larger frame works best. Both bulls should work to the cow you speak of,and I would probably use both.

There are a lot of folks jumping on the Monopoly band wagon right now, me included, as I just bought some to use this spring and bought some Monopoly sired eggs, but I think that you do have to be cautious where you use him at. The good ones were super good this fall and sold like crazy, but I also saw just as many that were not stout enough and wide enough based (the high % Angus breeding through I suppose), too straight pasterned, and maybe too small (if people ever realize that there is such a thing) to really go out and win much. I just think that you have to be more cautious of structure, size, and thickness than most people are realizing right now as they see the great ones being promoted

When using Monopoly , make sure the female transmits top and hip because most I have seen out of him are quetionable in that area.

Mark, yes the Raisback cattle had some Vision in them, and some Sonny. The phenotype was not clubby however. They were really big cows and didn't show the power you normally associate with Vision breeding. My point being this: Ace of Diamond calves that have been considered really good one's have NOT came from Vision daughters, but rather some obscure breeding that most folks wouldn't know about. Now I think it's a completely different story at Vogel's. What is good about this bull,he works to different pedigree's other than just clubby. Coming from the Zelda cow family in my opinion,is what makes this bull tick. Ask Jack or Jeff Bedwell how good of family the Zelda's are. For a long period of time the Bedwells won at State and National levels with females and steers from that family. I have just purchased a heifer that is considered out of a calving ease shorthorn bull that was bred at Cates' and the Zelda family. believe me she has plenty of femininity with substance, and will be bred to AOD. <beer>
