earlier I asked for opinions on a new digital camera. Got some great respones! I've decided on the Nikon 40. I had been looking before & liked one camera & it turned out to be that one.
I looked into Cord camera but they were all out & not sure when new order would be placed. They also would not swap lenses. I e-mailed Jack's camera as Mark Sneed suggested, even dropped his name, but they will only give me $65 for the existing lenses in exchange for an upgrade. That would stillmake the upgrade lenses about $550.
I guess I've decided to buy from either Best Buy or Walmart. Hated to do that but they offer the best deal & have them in stock.

thanks for all the advice! It really helped

GO TO Ebay. I got the Camera Brad Hook suggested for almost half of the retail price. I just had to be paitent and watch the auctions close. Cannon Rebel I haven't had a chance to test it out.

Hey, Red, is that the D-40?  If so, it's the one I have and I love it!

Try B&H Photo video on the web.  They don't always have the very cheapest prices, but usually cheaper than chain stores and they have really good specials from time to time.  One time I called to order a camera and when I was done he had sold me a kit that included that camera and a bunch of accessories for much less than I had planned to spend.  Quick shipping too.

I second B&H....very good people to work with and the people on the phones are professionals not some kid.  When I use to take wedding pics ect. they were my store of choice.

I do the "redneck" weddings in our area as my husband says lol.  My first one took place on playground equipment.  The best man rolled a ciggy and the groom had to take his chew out to kiss the bride.  They then came down the double slide.  The things I do let me tell you.  I can honestly say...I'm not the "Wedding Singer" lol

sssshhhhhhh! Don't tell anyone about the diamonds

When you get into livestock photography, how much of a difference does the mega pixel setting of a camera really make? For instance, if I'm looking at a D40 vs a D60, one is a 6.1mp and the other is a 10.2. At this point, is the mp difference enough to compensate the price difference?

Megapixels is a big "selling feature".  I am a pro and shoot with a 10 MP camera.  Unless you are making life-size posters of the cattle then you will be good with the D40!
The electronics people have somehow convinced everyone that megapixels is what makes the camera....when in fact, that is total BS!!  Just keep your f/stop lower, shutter speed high, and shoot away!!

Bawndoh knows what he is talking about. D 40 would work great. I have a RebelXT and it has 8.1MP and is more that I need.

Hey, Quint, would you have any interest in a 55 mm from a Canon Eos?  It's from a film camera but I'm told it would also fit the Canon digitals.  Also have, hmm, I think, a 35 - 135 zoom from same camera.  I'm not where the camera is right now so am guessing on the zoom.  The 55 is a Canon, the zoom is an add-on.  If your're not interested, what sort of value might they have?

and the REBEL xs or xti or xt is all someone needs with 2 or 3 lens you can do wonders

I bought for 328.00 Best buy rebel silver body XT with one len a 35-85 the other 2 lens is 18-35 and 100-200.  With these types of lens you can take close up and faraway pic of all your cute farm animals

Hope this help

Any camerea over 500 has too many bells and whistles and most you will not use.  BUT to those that have money go get them like.

Just my 2 cents

That's kind of where I was leading the discussion to. Unless you're printing incredibly large images, I don't think you'll see the need for a 10 MP camera. The camera companies need a way to justify releasing a new model and getting more money out of us though.

THE BIG DIFFERENTS is between SLR and POINT AND SHOOT cameras not in  8 MP

Sorry Dori, I am a Nikon guy. I have a small point and shoot canon but when it comes to my pro stuff I am all Nikon.
An 18-55 wide angle for a Canon can be bought for around 140-$170. a 35-135mm is about 175-$250 depending.

They usedto say that anything over 8 megapixel was photo quality and wold reproduce as well as film.  Most of the newer Digital SLRs are enough to take good quality pictures.
