This was discussed in some detail recently and I would like to get your further opinion.

I am raising cattle that I can register as Maine Anjous.  But I also want to have the club calf look in my cattle without the PHA and TH problems.  In looking through some catalogues recently I came across pictures of Total Solutions (340804) and Free Spirit (368552.)  I liked the blood lines of Free Spirit, but his photo in comparisons with that of Total Solutions is really lacking.  Total Solutions has the Habanero blood line in him and my herd bull is a double bred Habanero, so he is out.  A similar bull is Rocky Balboa (379037) with the Who Made Who bloodline for club calf use, but his Sire is Ali.  I have used Ali a great deal and will use his son Smokin Joe some this year.  I have several heifers from other sons of Polled Energizer, so the Free Spirit bull seems more of a fit genetically.  But I am not impressed with his photo in the catalogue.  It would be nice to see other photos of the same bull, for my breeding purposes.

I am not saying that I will use any of the bulls but I try to study the bulls and look at their decedents prior to buying semen.  I love to see the bull himself, when possible.

Joe Boy - You might want to try and find some Free Spirit calves to see if they look good. He has an interesting pedigree.

Jack,
One person has contacted me and told me where I can see some of his calves.  That is always the best way in my opinion.

With most of the clubby bulls you have to watch their real legs, but I do not have any rear leg troubles in my herd.  I only want to breed a few for the grandchildren to show and I will be real selective on the cows I bred to any club calf bull.  I want the club calf look but stay with the Maines as best I can.  I love the Habanero and Polled Energizer bloodlines and have had good luck with them.  I have sold several Ali bulls and steers.  I think Tyson and Smokin Joe might even be better than their sire for club calf production.

Always appreciate your comments.  How does it feel being older?  I will be 65 on February 14th.... I am my Mother's valentine to my Dad, who is still living.... 86 years old... and still runs cattle and a combine....
