I read that reliving some of my childhood when we would be cast out of the house and told to go find something to do-- we did-- usually it involved the creek in the pasture and lots of mud.  I did this with my kids also-- go out and find something to do.

I believe that they are now better adults for it-- they aren't scared to try to new things and have a good ethic-- work related and common sense related. 

My sister's kids are growing up under the watch them every minute style and they struggle to get along and find new things to do.  When they come to visit me-- I try to find things for them to do that may be risky, but we go by the "hurts, don't it"  rule at our house- try it once and it hurts-- so I guess you will think before you do it again.  Go get muddy!  :)
