I don't even participate in showmanship anymore.  Taking the calves out in the ring again just gets them worked up and antsy.  Also depends on when the Showmanship class is.  Some have it at the beginning of the show, and some at the end.  We generally pack all of our stuff up when they're doin showmanship so we're ready to roll when they release us.

I think showmanship can be a great learning experience for both the show person and the calf.  Especially for the younger exhibitors.  The two day shows that have it the evening before are really nice as we all want to get on the road when the show is over.

We dont attend for showmanship but if there is one and the calves act ok I might make them do it for expierence I often pack while showman ship is going on then either break down and put calf on trailer or break down, wash, and put calf on trailer

I don't know about you but I'm too competitive to walk into a ring with a calf thats being a butt and come out of there happy, even if I do win it(wether it be showmanship or breed) We also normally pack up during showmanship and get outta there.

To me showmanship is very important. To me it is a equal playing field. Meaning that if you payed $50 or $50,000. It's all about how hard you worked with that animal.

We've always taught our daughter that ever time you enter the ring you display your best showmanship skills. So essentially she and her cows practice each time she is in the ring. I agree with some of the other folks. It's great practice each time you participate in a showmanship class. If you start your animal early in the season and show in as many classes as possible by the time you get to county or state competitions both should feel pretty comfortable in the show ring. Last year at county my daughter was in the ring numerous times with all of our stock. We do showmanship last. By the time she went in the judge had already seen her work. She continued to do what she always does, maybe a little more intense. Anyway the judge commented on how he had watched her the entire day and she always had good control etc.......she won senior grand champion showmanship over quite a few older seniors.

At a jackpot show, showmanship would only be a draw for us if it we were chasing showmanship points and it was a sanctioned contest.  Otherwise, we might participate if the kids and cattle are ready and it fits into our schedule.  The only time I pretty much insist they participate in showmanship is at our local,  beyond that I leave it up to them.

It depends on the calf for me.  Some years I have had heifers that showed better their second time in that ring.  I don't attend shows for showmanship, but usually if they offer it, and it fits in the schedule I will participate.

A little background on the show I’m asking these questions about:

The show is in South Central Ohio.

The facilities are very nice in my opinion, Big show ring, nice wash rack, ample barn space and all the electric you could ask for within 50 yards of the show ring.

It will take place in the first part of April.
This show will take place on a Saturday.

This is a not a BEST points show.

This will be the 16th year for the show.

We usually have less than 100 head show up but we have had years where we hit the 130 range.

We are currently starting the show at noon and we do not have showmanship. I’m kicking around the idea of suggesting we move the show up to a 9:00am start and offer four age divisions of showmanship. This is the way the some of the BEST point shows in Ohio operate. "With the showmanship starting at 9:00 a.m."

Thanks for everybody’s feedback

All the jckpots we attend have showmenship classes, my son would rather not go but he does, and last year for the first time he won a class, granted it was a small class but the kids he was sowing against were all kids that finish near the top if not win.
Are fealing is that the more practice he has as a showman the better he can present the calf when it counts.

FYI

BEST moved showmanship to the end of the shows. AMEN, we usually have to travel a distance to a show. I like to show and get out of there. We use to have to wait and til showmanship was done to show. Now they hold it following the steer and heifer show. Lots of shows have went to two rings and two days. Steers one day and heifers the other. I also like that concept if you ahve the numbers. I like the two rings as evident by this past Ohio AGR. The judges were day and night. The kids had a chance. ONe judge placed a fourth overrall heifer in one ring third in class. SHowmanship is great but I like it after the regular show.
So move the show up to 9am and then allow the folks that want to do showmanship to stick around and show in it.JMO

It really depends if I had a good showing day or not if I do showmanship. Most of the time I will do it, just because I have gotten pretty good at it over the years and its like practice to me so practice makes perfect!

When we started out showing 15 years ago, we always said there was one thing we could control showmanship. Still today, no matter how good the calf is a person can still place or win something if the work is done before hand. We always showed in showmanship and it was a bonus for us to attend the show. Just my opinion.

Showmanship is what showing is.(PERIOD)  Showmanship is not won or lost during the showmwnship contest.  Any Judge worth dime, will have his top 2 or 3 showman picked out during the cattle show.  On the occasion when Showmanship is separate from the show, or before, the Judge can tell who has done their homework, and who hasn't.  It's the many hours of rinsing and brushing, the trials of finding that perfect ration, and most of all, the hours and hours of learning the speed to walk each calf, and how to make it always stop in that perfect set.  A winning showman knows their calf  from the tip of its nose the the tip of its tail.  A winnig Showman takes much more pride in the showmanship prize than in the Supreme Banner.  Showman ship IS The Show!  Don't ever take it for granted!

It has always irked me that some Judges will give the showmanship trophy to the second best solely because the BEST showman won the Calf Show.

This is from my perspective as a "Mom"...I travel umteen hours, a gazillion miles, help work with that calf for numerous hours...what harm does it do to wait another half hour to do showmanship?  If I'm in that big of a hurry to get out of there...I should have stayed home.  If they have showmanship its our rule you do it.  The kid and the calf do not get any better in the ring if I have it all in trailer.

It's worked for us...My daughter is 10 (almost 11).  The strides she's made in self confidence and showing is unbelievable.  Now at shows, people seek her out to help them show, and she's starting to win showmanships over the 13 year olds.

So now that I've beat around your question...if I had to choose between one with showmanship and one without, I'd go to the one with showmanship

I agree with the last 3 posts with the strongest point being, that, showmanship is really the only thing that you can have a large part in deciding or have the most influence in. I'm with AAOK about being irked when the judge picks another kid to spread it around just B/C of how well someone does during the day.
I also think that it depends on the judge, meaning that if the judge is not into it and doesn't have the patience to teach so that the showman can learn what they may do better, it's a waste of everyone's time. We've all seen that more than enough, when you can just tell the judge just wants to get home too.  It doesn't take very much time to teach and encourage a child in the ring with the right words. Kent Habeger for one had a gift in this area and a smile that could light a kid up.

Nasc i voted yes but after considering, showmanship is good for the two day shows, i think it would be more of a hassle to do showmanship and a steer/heifer show in the same day. but if you guys decide to throw it in there, i'll have to show em how its done  ;D

(jk showmanship is not my game  :D )

I would have to agree with everyone who says that showmanship matters. I always took pride in my showmanship skills and always felt much prouder with a showmanship win than a calf win. Showmanship teaches pride and respect and is a huge confidence builder for kids. I also love to judge showmanship and always take the time to talk to each showman( in the young classes) before I gave my reasons to tell them my reasons for placing them there and to let them know what they did right as well.
