First snow here, so back to the books. I'm just posting this stuff because I stumble on it and then usually never find it again.
So, here is a list of all the Red Polled breeders in the United States in 1910 with their locations. It's a pretty long list. I've always thought Red Polled were bred into Polled Shorthorns. A person who is familiar with the early Polled Shorthorns might take a look at the list of Red Polled breeders and see if there were Red Polled herds nearby the first Polled Shorthorn herds. I don't know the history well enough to recognize the place names.

There may have been lots of Red Polled herds but there were shorthorn herds everywhere so there had to be herds In close proximity. That said my neighbor has Red Angus! The first polled shorthorns were called single standard as they had an outside cross but those bloodlines were discarded when the Bates bred double standards were found. Their origins are quite well documented. The polled mutant or sport gene is quite common and there have been several in the history of the breed. There are also confirmed by DNA polled full blood limousin and Blonde D'Aquitaines again because it is one of the more common or maybe better said more noticeable mutations!

Thanks for posting this; will have to have a look.
My dad bred and showed Red Poll and Guernsey cattle back in his youth, in the 1940s-1950s... not sure if I have any of the registration papers on any of his cattle... and they were all long gone or absorbed into the commercial beef herd by the time I came along.  But...I'll bet that he'd have been excited to see the red Shorthorn-cross cattle we've been producing for the last few years.
Have, from time to time, considered incorporating some Red Poll into our crossbreeding program - but they seem to be even harder to find, in these parts, than good, commercially-oriented Shorthorns.

Not related, but connected-
Looking for a picture of Quasah cattle, (from that book) I found this picture. It doesn't exactly look Shorthorn, but it looks good.
Does this look like a Maine bull?

This is a Belgian Red Pied. A Shorthorn influenced breed with some Holstein, Meuse Rhgine Yssel and red pied breeds form Belgian and surrounding areas.
Quasah are Shorthorn x Sahiwal cross from Australia.
