So Im curious Mr  Coyote. In your opinion do some of these older bulls have a place in the modern herd? It looks to me like they do. If you look at the numbers they should be short on growth. I dont pay attention to the numbers honestly but it makes me wonder. Do you see them having enough grow? Grade?

I am also curius more regarding steer carcass data and bw% of the cow as well as how easy the old lines calve. Greatly appreciate it and I have to add shortie breeders have posted outstanding cattle... Coyote do u have a video of bonanza?

do you think that numbers, are relitive?  I mean, what was a 21.0 YW in 1970, might not actually be a 21.0 YW in 2012?

I like you Brock, was not around when these cattle were first being used.. but I do know that the cattle industry, like everything else goes on a pendulm curve.. I would think that if you could match up curve swings, you should be fine... my 2cents I guess.

I think the growth question could be answered by looking at that roan cow-shes pretty good sized-It may be the picture but she almost looks like she has a touch of dual in her.One thing you cant mistake is her head-the cattle back then(at least the polled ones) really had pretty heads. O0

I agree with you Mark. I guess what I am asking is are there big drop offs in performance in general going back with these older bulls? I feel they can do just as well as most of todays bulls. I believe its a slippery slope tho. You have to be careful what bulls to bring back. I love the cows head as well. She looks like she would fit right in here.

truth, I agree. Who knows how the numbers would be today.  I like the middle of the road theory myself. Nothing extreme. Just good in all aspects and then try and make as many of those type cows as I can.

Last year we had 3 bull calves that were sired by bulls from the 60"s, 2 by Cummberland Gay lad and 1 by Bonneyview Hero 7Z.
We were pleased with the growth they did have and they fit in very well with our other bulls. Our average WDA at 205 on all our bulls were 3.22  and these bulls were from 3.17 - 3.22. I thought maybe we would get some short little puds but they turned out well.

I think some of the older genetics do add some positive characteristics to the modern Shorthorn, lower BW and doing ability, to name a few.
I guess time will tell if they are good enough cattle or not.
