My daughter has been showing steers for 7 years. THIS one will not break. He's 11 mos., 1050 lbs. and continues to throw his head to the left and spin his body to the left into her when trying to set, or if he doesn't want to walk. He's also a jumper. She walks him daily, some days he will not budge, and when he does, he'll take one or two steps at a time. She's tied him up first, then try to work him, she's reversed that, and she has not done that and tried to get him going. Nothing that she has done in the past is working. She has even broke a production steer for a project, but can't get this show steer ro cooperate, and not try to overpower her. He has never gotten away from here either. We are going to AZ Nationals and I am not excited to see him bulldoze his way and not do anything right.. again. Any tips or advice is appreciated! Side note, we have tried Cattle Calm & Focus *actually think this made him worse* didn't do much at all. Tried thorazine this weekend at a show, he was a little better, but still pushed sideways into her and turned when trying to set in the ring.

I’ve never liked the fancy “calming products” and I really can’t nor never have jived with drugging one although ferappease or whatever it’s called is a more natural solution ive heard of but not tested, never used nor noticed enough differences from the expensive pastes to actually even use them loyally let me tell you how I deal with one who wants to act up on me first let’s set down some of my groundrules I never SMACK a cow unless they are actually about to try and kill me but if they kick me they are getting a kick (horses do this to cattle cattle respect it simple) back head butting gets a succession of FIRM yanking preferably with a chain halter. I really do attempt to discourage mine from being very headbutty oriented with me as it usually never ends well. if he wants to get rowdy then I say let’s get it on buddy what do I mean by this? You arent gonna overpower a Large animal it simply won’t work as I’m positive you know by now BUT. You can obviously outsmart the dummies that bovines are and honestly with cows it’s a damn rough battle of wills until you get that perfect show cow you’ve always wanted and yet you’ll probably still have your days because you are completely different and don’t speak the same language whatsoever BUT ALSO you can throw their little tubby asses off balance and get them into thinking mode so they decided they don’t wanna walk? Oh they’ll walk. what I do typically when mine lock up on me I give them hell for it tight circles making them spin and run as fast as you can tightly around them each time they lock up and you’ll have yourself an extremely quick solved problem from my experience but don’t be so hard on them cattle are more sensitive than you think they are just big hardasses so give them a good little handful of feed for a job well done so YOU aren’t the big bad mean scary human that makes them do things they don’t wanna do
