I was wondering how short or long everyone ties their calves for the first time they are ever tied? How short or how long?  How high or low do you tie them? and how long?  I have been handling them every night.  We are letting them drag ropes around and I catch them every night and use the pressure and release and started rubbing on them while I am holding onto the ropes.  they aren't too bad but I have one that is a lttile higher strung. I am ready to move onto tying but would like to see or hear what ever one else does also.

thanks ahead of time!!!!!!!!!!

In the beginning, you should tie them for a short while, and then bring it on longer.  Make it short enough so that the animal wont trip over it, but long enough so that they can pull. tie it the same height as the head.  we tied my 2011 show calf for two hours the first day and then it stayed two hours and sometimes longer.  Good, you should handle them every night.  that is good.  We put my steer through the chute, and put the halter on and then we tied them and petted them and once that was good we would give them grain.  Now we are starting to halter them by walking in the pen and we tie them up for a while to calm them down and then we start walking with the pressure and release.

If u have any more questions p.m. me

If you are breaking them to tie I usually start them tied with their head at a position that if they go down their OK and then tie their heads up for about 1/2 hour the first couple times and then slowly increase it to about an hour. you should be in the same area they are when you are doing this in case they is a problem. I also make sure the knot is one you can quickly release and have a knife some where close just in case, never had to use it but do not want to need one and not have it around if I did.

I have found that once you have them broke to tie it is best if you do not tie them up longer than an hour at a time, we have found that if they have even the slitest structure issue tying them for long periods of time will magnify the problem over time.
when they are young and you are just working them once a day byethe time you rinse and blow out it has been an hour, then tie them up for no more than an other hour. As they mature and you start tying them in a stall all day (some put pens in the cooler know so they are free to move) we found it best for them to tie them for an hour in the morning and then an hour in the evening.
