Need advice:  For those that feed showsteers Umbargers, have been told to start on breeder/grower until 650lbs and switch to cattle blaster, others have said best way to use this product is to use cattle blaster right from the start on a steer, then if he is getting too fat, then mix breeder grower later to slow him down, which advice is the best way to go?

It really depends on how the calf fleshes. Personally we feed Breeder Grower the whole way through and if we have one that needs a little more cover will feed Barley Base. With that said, I've never had one not get fat enough on BG. If you have one that needs that frame burned on down, go ahead and hit them with Blaster then switch back to BG when you need the hair back.

This is our first year of feeding Umbarger as well! We have a shorthorn steer and we started him off with cattle blaster. Since he was sired by a bull who tends to throw tall calves, we decided to feed him the mostly corn ration so that it will stunt his growth and he will get fat. Luckily genetically he will still have a lot of hair.

I have fed both steers and heifers Umbarger's ever since Ive been showing.  I usually start out with Cattle Blaster on the steer and then whenever it gets time to finish him out I switch him over to breeder grower just to keep him fresh looking.
