My son won Grand Champion honors at our local show this past weekend with his Troubadour steer, and my husband and I thought it would be neat to get the hide tanned for him, as this is his senior year of high school.  Does anyone know of a place in South Central Tx. to get this done, and the approximate cost?  Any help is appreciated.

Any taxidermist can do it.  It is important to get it to them quickly to hold the hair.  We had one done a couple years ago and I think it was about $200 but I am not sure on that price.

There is a local guy here, but he quoted us $500 - $600., which I though was a little steep.

Local feed store mounted their sons steer's head and it is behind the counter.  Makes you do a double take when you walk in.    I had an old cow thathad been my first show heifer, and had sired a herd bull that sired many club calves and many daughters that stayed in the herd a long time.  I still wish we had tanned her hide.

Would be a cool thing to do with the added bonus of weeding a few city girls from the dating pool :)

5-600 is not bad if they do a good job.  Elk hides are almost that much and they arent as big.

I asked my wife last night what we paid and she said we paid $375.  Just proves who is better at keeping up with exspenses.  Plus that was about 5 years ago.
