it seems a lot of discussions are splitting hairs and that the profit margin generated between those hairs is small compared to other costs.

with the above as a given and that the spread between angus and anything else is $1/head and all other expenses relative other than.....

land.  if you could locate anywhere, where would you locate to minimize costs, ie shipping potloads to appropriate destinations, having enough buyers around to purchase show calves anything along these lines.

Feedlot-Iowa  (Cheaper feedstuffs)

Commercial cow/calf-Wyoming/Montana  (Cheaper land)

Show Cattle-Texas (When it comes to showing calves those people take it to a whole another level)

Probably western Nebraska or eastern Wyoming.  Land costs, good grass, major feedlots, and some of the best club calf producers anywhere are in these areas, imo.  And, interstates to just about everywhere.

I think you could do all of that in MO.

Access to:

One of the largest stockyards (Joplin) and buyers

Available feedstuffs

Ground is good if you manage it

Still located in midwest for shows.

Here in NC land values are very high so this is where I would like to be:
Feedlot-Nebraska or Kansas
Cow/Calf Pair-Wyoming or South Dakota
Show Cattle-Would have to agree on Texas as its a whole other ball game in that state.
Also I would want somewhere where I could grow hogs or chickens as this is a very nice fertilizer source.

I would have to say that for any facet of the industry South Central Oklahoma. You have good ground that relative to other places is cheap. You can still buy large enough parcels to make it worth wild. The feedlots out in Tulia and Herford Texas are not an unreasonable distance and I-35 can take you to the Oklahoma City Stock Yards or the Fort Worth Stock Yards within 2 hours.

And.....................I woud expand the area to include North Central Texas.  All those Texas buyers are close enough to purchase Top Quality Show Calves at a much cheaper price.

I live in southeast Missouri. A lot of feedlot operators here buy locally, fatten them up, and ship them to West Plains in southwest Missouri because they sell a lot higher there (mostly the big steers).

There aren't too many shows around here though.  (lol)

these are great answers, short and to the point.  some of my family is from wichita, so i am familiar with wichita and the flint hills to the east.  others are from Alva, moved to stillwater and visited decatur a while back, so i know about the I35 corridor (where all the oldtime cowboys came from, so cattle have been there quite a while).  where does one have to be south or east of to get away from the alkalai problems around alva and haysville kansas, or is it just in pockets everywhere?

ie add good or decent water with rights to the mix.

I am moving to a place about 40 mi east of Wichita in a year or so.  It is the old family homestead and from what I know about the place alkali problems are not a problem, and we have a water sheds or ponds that stay full almost all of the time.  Beautiful country especially during spring burning.  I have lived in the flint hill all of my life and look forward to it every year.
