    40 Days out of show..(PICTURES)

Not only feed but something to start expanding his gut, along with stabilized rice bran. Here I would add beet pulp, and oat hay, not sure what you have in your area.

    How much cedar fiber?

At 4 inches deep you need 44 cubic feet (cf), at 6 inches you need 72 cf, not sure how many cubic feet in a bag, so if it were 5 cf you would need 11 bags for 4" and 14+ for 6". I did some research, Cedarest, the one we used is 2.5 cf, so you would need 22 bags for 4" or 28 for 6". Then add 2...

    Heifers have small appetites

Do they have free choice hay, if so, only feed them hay after you feed their grain, and give them at least 30 minutes before you hay them. You might want to get some 4 way (wet cobb) and see if they eat that, if they do, slowly mix the other feed into it, this way they can develope a taste for it.

    How much is too much?

We never really fed over 25 pounds of mixed feed a day, plus a flake of 3 way grain hay each a day. Had calves gain anywhere from 2.5 to 4.2 a day at that rate. Our Unforgivens were the  best gainers. There is a study out there where the the steers on a control diet gained better or more...

    First Primo Calf posted

The manager at Colburns posted a picture of one of the first Primo Calves, he is out of a Fu Man Chu first calf heifer. Ron Colburn said they are coming in the 70-80 pound range, stout and hairy. I hope to be posting my own in about 5 weeks.

    JPJ Daughters

Why is it when the Shorthorn breed gets discussed, the most negative comments and arguments come from the Shorthorn people themselves, how can you promote your breed and expand your market when you all can't even come to any kind of consensus as breeders? (pop)

    Favorite Brand of Cattle Feed

I have fed the Purina, cost went up to much, We get sacked feed from 2 mills in the state (California) Associated feeds, and OH Kruse. weed did very well using either. They are similar we feed which ever cost the least that year. I believe that Blaine Rodgers helped develop both feeds. The...

Steer getting taller, but not filling out.

In the picture he looks like he is balanced and growing fine, he does not look like there is anything going on you should be concerned with. Add a little fat supplement to his feed and keep feeding him, I think you are going to be fine. When he gets up to about 1000 pounds switch him to a...

Steer getting taller, but not filling out.

Sounds about right, if you'r use to the cluby steers who stay chuby through their whole growth process it can be a little alarming. At the end he should be fine.

Steer getting taller, but not filling out.

I would add Stabilized rice bran to his diet to increase the fat content. 30 pounds seems to be a lot for a 800 pound calf, that is close to 4 percent of his body weight, I would guess he is he is wasting some of that feed, (just going right on through) If it were me I would cut it back to 12...

Steer getting taller, but not filling out.

Look at your feed, he may need more calories, and a little less protein. Do you have him on a worming regimen, about every 45 days? Do you feed twice a day or once? What feed mix or ratio are you feeding?

holding a 1300 pound steer for march

Not sure what a scoop weighs, but I would feed him 2 pounds oats (or feed), 8 pounds loose beet pulp,  one pound Stabilized Rice bran, and one pound Calf manna twice a day, plus free choice hay. Whenever we cut back on calories we add the protein  and fat to help maintain their condition a little.

    Preventative actions preparing for shows

All our show were 5 to 6 hours away, we made sure we had given probiotics prior to and during the show. If leaving early in the morning we would cut the grain ration in half and feed more hay the night before, leaving later in the day or morning we gave them a little grain and plenty of hay for...

    300 pounds before January 20th

Worm him and try feeding him 3 times a day, you can increase his intake while giving him less per feeding. Do you feed any hay? What is the nutritional makeup of your supplement? We always use the Stabilized Rice Bran, just wondering what the fat and protein are in your supplement.

FINAL UPDATE FROM ROYAL Heifer difficult to setup and won't stand still in ring

Great job on all accounts, heifer cooperating, and the placings.

    300 pounds before January 20th

How much has he been gaining daily now? Is he cleaning everything up quickly or does it take awhile? If he is cleaning it up quickly you may want to up it a little, to like 12 pounds a feeding or even try 3 feeding a day at 9 pounds a feeding, just start him off at about 7.5 and work him up over...

Heifer Halter Issue - any advice?

How is she with a showstick and scratching her, I have a bred heifer, who was shown just a few times as a calf. I can go out in the pasture with the halter and she will run away. I can go out with the halter and the showstick and if I get the showstick on her she will freeze and just stand there...

Need advice on using a cooler room on calves

At this time of the year we would just leave them out all day and then run them in after the kids got out of school, rinse, work the hair and then tie them high for an hour, work on setting up and kick out, every day. You want to work the hair, but more than that I think handling them every day...

Need advice on using a cooler room on calves

I think the calves all have their baby hair, most are still fuzz balls, they are just rinsed and tied in front of fans then clipped right before the sale.

Need advice on using a cooler room on calves

The people I know that had a cool box rinsed twice a day, and the afternoon was with chilled water, their calves had a ton of hair, they may have had a ton of hair if they did it once a day, who knows. They did work the heck out of the hair, and that was probably the biggest thing that gave them...
